FROM PAGE 13 says Weales, arguing that 'a tliree-man system promotes goon hockey. " "In three-man, some referees can get on a power trip. " In a two-man system, one of- ficiai is deep in a team's end waât- ching the puck the other officiai is at that team's blueline watching the players andecailing penalties. If the officiai doesn't cail a penalty,. continues Weales, the, parents start yeuling. at the of- ficial deep in the, end who bhas nothing to do with cailing that penalty," said Weles. Ris thoughts drift to another hockey story. He recails a game in Brooklin where one parent i particular was giving Mim aliard time. Af- ter the gaIne, that pai'ent's son came Up to him, shook Mis hand, and commented' on how wel Weaies had handled the gaine. "He did that, to me twice. Hopefuily lie Wili get to Mis father." This year, Weales has been liandllng more, games at the Brookllni arena as opposed to Iroquois. Both, he says, have separate personalities wMcli af- fect the gaine and the parents watching the game. At Brooklin, where players age 5 to il pay, there is no contact and the action is dloser to the fans in the seats, says Weales. At Iroquois "lIt's a whole dif- ferent bail game. "At Iroquois there is a bigger ice surface and the parents are more removed froin the gaines because of the stands and the glass. n He says more parents atten the gaines at Brookiin and he has also observed that more gran- dparents attend the gaines' at Brooklin. "Most people think we are out there to pick on the kids and give them a pe nalty. But we don't stand and look down on the kids. We try to be their friend and then the referee." Weales recalis handling one gaine during whicl a players' skate lace came undone. He knew that if the player went to the bencli to get the skate tied liewould lose lis shift. So Weales tied the skate on the ice for hum. But refereeing a gaine does have its 10w points. Weales said referees do make mistakes and when they do they should admit it. In one gaine, Weales was drop- ping the puck in a team's end for a face-off. He looked Up and saw that one player was in the faceoff circle and out of the corner of his eye lie saw another stick being placed into the circle, so hie dropped the' puck.1 Unfortunately, there was only one player in the circle at the time.'. "That player just stared in amazement,"' recails Weales, stiil getting a chuckle froin the episode. Being around hockey s0 long, Weales has got to know each level of. play, and today hie would rather. referee a houseleague game.. One level lie will neyer referee again is men's hockey. "In men's hockey the players are worse- than the kids for whining," said Weales. He also does his share of refereeing ail-star gaines but he would rather referee house league. "The house league hockey in Whitby is as good as any around." Weales believes house league players in the past five years have improved by-30 per cent. "In house league there is also great communication with 95 per cent of the parents and kids." Involvement in minor hockey is not only. restricted to the maie side of the Weales family. His wife- Bonnie is his assistant referee-in-chief. "If I do 140 gaines this year, she wili attend 135. " Part of Bonnie's job is sitting in the stands, evaluating the new referees that Doug is working with. After the gaine Doug and his wife wiil go over the sheet then present it to the rookie referee. "I cail lier Deputy Dawg," jokes Weales, alluding to the car- toon character. "You eitlier like refereeing or you hate it. But l tell you something - it's a heu 'of a good way to spend your turne."
