PAGÉ20. WHITBYFREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DEC. 10,1986 Town to lease 6 buses to cover routes. Whitby Transit's modified school buses are on their way out. At Monday night's meeting, council mem- bers gave approval to leasing six buses to cover the town's new bus routes. The six buses will be of a coach style, which council members hear- tily approved. But, just as at the committee level, coun- cillors did not approve of the Town becoming the owners of the buses and. eventually the whole transit system. A report from the public works depar- tment showed that the town could save $33,000 a year by purchasing two buses and leasing the remaining four as opposed to leasing ail six. But Mayor Bob Atter- sley echoed the thoughts of councillors opposed to a Town-owned system when he said there would be problems and higher costs in building garages for the bÉses and determining who would be liable for repairs. Only councillors Tom Edwards and Marcel Brunelle opposed the new system. Juvenile hockey FROM PAGE 17 Markham." Sears said he pulled his team off the ice in a game in Markham during a previous season. The game eventually resumed, but was called early, he said. Whitby lost the Nov. 23 engagement by a 3-2 score, coming close to tying it after climbing back from a 3- deficit to begin the third period. Love and Derek McCarl scored for Whitby. The Whitby team had a win and a tie in the two games prior to the rough Markham con- test. The tie game, 1-1, was frustrating as Whitby outshot the visitors 44-14 but were stopped cold by a sen- sational goaltender. Love scored the Whitby goal. The team is one win short of evening their record in regular season play. Edwards, while saying that the town should take the $33,000 savings voted against the system only on that point. He approved of the new routes which would see them increase from four tofive. The three separate school representatives will no longer sit on the public board because with the extension of full funding to separate secondary schools there is no longer a need to represent Catholic ratepayers on the public board. Representatives Mike Connors, from the region: Larry Corrigan, from Oshawa; and Judi Oldman, from Whitby, will be retiring. Although they will not serve on the 17-member board next year, they had the opportunity of voting for the new chairman and vice- chairman, Monday night. "Legally the separate trustees have a right to vote on all issues before the board until their term ends, Jan. 1," Bruce Mather, director of education, said.
