No one denies that affordabie housing is needed in the Region of Durham. The real question is - Will DRNPH be able to construct affor- dable units, legally, in Bluegrass Meadows? Tihe plan, as proposed by thse DRNPH requires significant modification to even come close the sciseme imposed an ail purchasers of property in Bluegrass Meadows until 1999. Our councîllors, with the exception of Drumm and Emm, appear to be sidestepping the real issue. Attersley, Brunelle, Edwards, Batten and Bugelli gave grand and glorious speaches on social graces that had littie or nothing to do with affordable housing. Our Whitby councillors can give ail the excuses they want, but it doesn't make the covenants, imposed on the lands in Biuegrass Meadows, go away. It is taxpayers money that builds subsidized housing. This money should be used to the best advantage. Does this mean building Iuxury non-profit housing? C.A.R.A. There "I be a general meeting at Westminster United Churcis on Manning Rd., Whitby, on Wed- nesday, October 8, 8:30 p.m., for ail Bluegrass Meadow residents. A survey was conducted and the resuits verified what organizers of thse program have known al aiong. The Block Parent Pfogram 'Works' and people of ailages use it. Incidents reported in the survey ranged from a lost child, to a 76 year old gentleman who became dizzy and faint while out for a walk, he went to a Block Parent home and asked that a family member be called. He was taken to hospital where he had a heart attack. He has since' made a full recovery. The iargest age group using Block Parents proved to be five to 13 year olds. Aithough originaily formed to help prevent chiid molestings and abductions, the Block Parent program bas grown and expanded since its inception in London, Ont. in 1968.
