And a look at the building permit report issued by the town's public works depar- tment contains the kind of figures to back up the Mayor's prediction. For the month of Sep- tember a total of $11,140,365 in building permits had been issued bringing the 1986 total to $80,117,462 with three months left in the year. The town broke the 1985 record of $68.1 million last month. "That's not bad for nine months we just can't keep up with it," said an enthused Mayor Attersley. Noteworthy in this month's report is the total number of living dwelling permits which have been issued this year, 811, which in- cludes 76 apartment units. Mayor Attersley said the town may pass the all-time record for living dwellings which was set at 1035. The only downward swing for the town is the value of commercial permits which have been issued. Figures show that as of September 30, only $4,918,100 worth of commercial permits were issued compared to $7,698,110 issued by the same time last year. This, even though 64 permits have been issued so far this year compared to 63 for all of last year. "I'm not too worried about the commercial," said Mayor Attersley. "When you have the population increasing the commercial sector will catch up." The Mayor said that already for the month of October nearly $4 million in permits have been processed which includes a $1.2 million permit for an apartment building to be built near the CPR overpass on Dundas St. E. Aldom Enterprises is building the 67 unit apartment building un- der the province's Ren- terprise program. Un- der the program the province will provide loans towards the building of the apar- tment building and in return, the builders are required to offer 40 per- cent of the apartments to needy familles with rents for those units based on their incomes. "It's the same idea as a movie on a big screen, the viewer shouldn't feel stronger than the pain- ting," said Burnett. Perhaps that is the reason why most of Burnett's work is pain- ted on very large can- vasses. But the artist does not subscribe to the cliche that 'bigger is better'. "I just feel more com- fortable working big, there is a lot more space to work in," said Bur- nett, who in his last show at the Isaacs Gallery in Toronto displayed paintings measuring 7 feet high by anywhere from 8 to 12 feet wide.
