The Environmental k Assessasent Board does not (and will not) give us a 100 percent safety guaranteed operation because they know that nothing is 100 percent safe. Therefore, this station does not belong on this proposed site because the E.A.B. has no solution, tbey -have taken the: we don't know what to do with the waste so let's try this for now; approach and Whitby is !as good a place as any! The council of Whitby, only there because of Whitby voters (tax- payers), bas the duty to stop this madness. Even if they are not looking for reelection, they stiil have to live up to their responsibility and assure the people of WHitby a- safe and healthy town. The system waits for things to happen, it's just that in this case, waiting for things to happen is like writing your own death warrant! Since 1 have not seen - in any local paper - the report made by the En- vironmental Assess- ment Baord (paid for by Decom?) I will therefore quote one of the boards recommen- R eader attacks Swan 's column To The Editor: While I usualy avoid the risk of .lending. credibility to ridiculous statements about education, 1 take excep- tion to Bill Swan's commenta in his column "Witb Our Feet Up" (Sept. 3, 1986). If Mr.' Swan would bring bis feet and bis bead down frorn wherever tbey are and visit our scbools, he would find, that con- trary to what be wrote: 1) our schools are dynamic action-packed places of learning; 2) the vast majority of children do not hate scbool, but rather find learning a happy and exciting experience; 3) teachers provide excellent role models kfor students; S4) physical punish- ment bas been banned in Durham public scbools since 1983. Many other school 15oards in Ontario^ have followed suit. For a portrayal of what is happening in our schools Mr. Swan could also read the articles appearing elsewbere in the Free Press written .by reporter Jan Dodge. I agree wtih Mr. Swan that parental in- volvement is important to children's school suc- cess. Fortunately most parents do in fact get actively involved in their éhildren's school lives and are supportive of our fine teachers and administrators. Sincerely, Ian D.R. Brown Vice-chairman, Durham Board of Education Whitby Trustee. IMore sports on Pages .20, 21 FROM PG. 18 Midgets Scoring a single goal ln each game were Matt Shearer and Chris Van .Clief. Wbat a blow to our in- telligence! Since when do you get an indepen- dent inspector paid by bis employer. The facts speak for themselves - too many if's, should nots, maybe's, and the knowledge that the ministry did nothing to stop Decom's illegal operation in Ajax! The board can propose ail they want, this will be a highly dangerous and risky operation, flot guaran- teed as 100 percent foolproof by anybody and should therefore neyer be built on the proposed site. That would be 100 percent lunacy. There is nothing to be gained bere, in fact it wîll be a great loss to al the people of Whitby. The loss of our health and the health of our children. And that 1 will guarantee! Mrs. L. Peltenburg Lupin Dr. Whitby. It's that time of year again for the weekly column of Corridor Capers. It's good to be back, but what a lovely summer holiday.. PAPER DRIVE The Cub and Scout paper drives will commence this Saturday and continue until next June on the second Saturday of each month. Please have your papers bundled and at the roadside by 8 arn. and the troups will pick them up. This is the chief fund- raising project for the Scout and Cub groups, so it is important that you save your old papers and donate to the Scout movement. DECOM The Environmental Assessment Board has given conditional approval for Decom Medical Waste Systemsto build their pathological waste transfer station on Consumers-Sunray Dr. in Whitby. The boards approval is subject to some 21 conditions, covering a vast range of requirements, but none of the requirements will eliminate the dangers that Decom may inflict upon the area businesses and residents. The busy,,built-up location that Decom chose to locale is definately not beneficial to the area. Restaurants and food establishments and residents may suffer because of the poor choice of location. If you are concerned, as many of us are, send your concerns to the Hon. James Bradley, Minister of the Environment, Queen's Park,- and call your local politicians and voice your concernis. It is not just immediate area residents who have grave doubts concerning Lecom, persons from al over Wbitby are upset. Don't delay, phone and write your letters today 1 LAURIE AND DAVE Our congratulations to Laurie Ki rkton and David Foote, who were married last Saturday at the Free Methodist Church on Rossland Rd. It 'was a beautiful wedding, and we send our best wishes for a long and happy marriage. BLUEGRASS MEADOWS The subsidized townhousing projeet slated for part of Bluegrass Meadows will shortly be before Whitby Council. Research into the history of Bluegrass Meadows definately showed that NO townhouses were to be built in the subdivision. Residents in the area and Ratepayers from ail over town should be insisting that the town and the region live up to their part of the bargain. Markborough also has a great deal of responsibility to the residen: ta of Bluegrass Meadows. Loss of property values is not speculation, it is a fact, and one wonders if the region is prepared to compensate each resident in Bluegrass to the tune of 20 to 30 tbousand dollars if they proceed with this ill-fated plan. CORRIDOR DANCE The Corridor Area Ratepayers Association will hold their annual fund-raising dance at the Legion' Hall, Byron St. S. in Whitby on Saturday, Novçmber 15 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. This bas always been a fun filled evening, and this year will be no exception.
