Free Press Staff Photo Province studies M~ commuter needs FROM PG. 6 The last major travel study done by the province was tbe Metro Toronto and Region Transportation Study in the 1960s which led to the formation of GO Transit in 1967. According to a GO Transit release, travel across regional boun- daries bas increased remarkably in recent years and the trend is expected to continue with the growth of em- ployment opportunities in Metro and the ever- expanding population of its surrounding municipalities. In conjuction with the study, a special ad- visory group bas been formed to study ways of improving interregional transport service in the area. The group, headed up by MTC deputy minister David Hobbs, reports directly to MTC minister Ed Fulton and is expected to complete a white paper on its fin- dings within six montbs. There are currently 17 transit systems operating in the Toronto commutershed and the province spends over $500 million annually funding these through GO as well as subsidies for municipal roads and transit systems. The MTC's advisory group will study ways to improve the integration of these systems and suggest organizational changes to enhance public mobility and en- sure maximum value for the taxpayes' transit investment. Tbere will be a press conference today, (Wednesday, Sept. 10) at the Durham Region headquarters attended by regional officiais, MTC and GO Transit representatives to ex- plain in more detail the study and its im- plications. Eleanor bas worked almost exclusively in residential design althougb sbe bas done some contract work with offices. She prefers to work with traditional styles, but contem- porary uines bold a great deal of fascination for ber as well. Eleanor has found Permits FROM PG. 8 in residential permits. "lBecause of last year's trend 1 knew it would go over iast years record. Bring in the bouses to the town and the others (commercial and residential developments) will follow, " said Mayor Bob Attersley. "The figures show people want to buy and live in Whitby." The total number of permits issued by the town in August for residential development was 54. To date, the town bas issued 658 residential permits. For the same period last year the town had issued 522 residential permits,. wbich led Mayor Attersley to speculate that the town could reach $100 million in building permits for 1986. IlWe could reacb $100 million but we'Il definitely be in the $90 million range," said the Mayor. over ten years in the business that the most interesting aspect of ber job is the people she meets. She bas .noted several changes in these ten years in people's at- titude to interior design. For one thing, more use is being made of designers today, probably as both par. tners in the home are working. "People's overail expectations are mucb greater", she says, "and they are much more interested in their surroundings." People like to be in a nice environment and are spending more time and money in this direc- tion. She finds she is dealing with a group of people more educated towards design than the people ten years ago. Eleanor empbasizes that people's tastes dif- fer over the years.
