On ber "first time ever out fishing" Stephanie Roy coached by veteran fisherman Rick Eaton, captain of "Escaped", landed the two big ones from Whit- by harbour. Athougli the cbinook went right off Eaton's 30-pound scales, he estimated one at 35 pounds, the otber dloser to 40. "I'm a fair weather boater," Roy said. "Rick's been offering to take me out fishing for a long trne. Finally I tbought, this la it. Vm going to go ... It was nice and calrn this morning, soI1 didn't cblcken out. "-Wben yo u realize you've got a fisb on the line, you can just feel The Oshawa Turul Checkers Variety (un- der 9) soccer team played a tough Whitby team at Peel Park Wed- nesday, August 6 but came away victorlous by a 3-1 count. The Witby team started tbe game much stronger than the Osbawa ide but within ten minutes into the game, tIhe Oshawa team took control, resulting in yourbheart pounding and the adrenalin surging," sbe said, reliving the moment. Altbough the first fish didn't give ber much trouble, the second was more difficult. 46I chased it ail around the boat. It took me a good balf hour to land it. " "I took out 200 yards of line every, time it ran," Eaton said. "Tbank goodness I was with somebody who knew bow to fish," Roy said. Eaton, a Scarborough resident who lives on bis boat at Port Whitby during tbe 'summer, said, "I love fishing and if I can sbow people how to fisb, I will." H1e stressed that "the lady landed the fishbherself. " Eaton admits to knowing a "special spot on the lake," and lias tackle boxes brimming with brigbtly colored lures, to wicb he often the go-ahead goal by Kevîn Higney. And just before the haîf-time whistle Turul went up by two goals on a marker by Mike Davies. In tbe second half both teama traded goals, for Witby, Graeme Wbyte and for Oshawa, Kevin Higney had bis second of tbe game. Mlid-fielder Mike Francis and defender adds a customn touch. A large supply of elec- tronic equipmnent wich shows him wbat depth the fîsh are at plus a temperature probe ail help too. He scientifically keeps a book recording water temperature, weather, and wind along with the kind of fish he has caugbt under those conditions. Armed with these records he can predict wbere and when to fish. "The next week or two will be prime fishing," Eaton said. Roy gleefully told how she had phoned ber husband at work from their boat, the Royal Scott. "He called me a lucky little --- (so-and- 50)." Roy plans to mount the fisb as a trophy. Would she go fishing again? "Maybe tomorrow," she grinned. Andrew McLaughlin had strong performan- ces for the Turul side. Despite an impressive 8-2-O record, Checkers can only dlaim third spot in their division of the Durham Region Youth Soccer League.
