To date the group's organizers have enlisted "4about"' 12 members but because they bave not yet held a meeting of the entire group, the organizers ,feit It "1premature"' to corne out wlth an officiai statement about the group's composition, aima or objectives. }Iowever, one member of the 'group was prepared to speak witb the Free Preuspeovlided w he was notildentified. According to the spokesman, the originator of the group la "a woman from the west end of town"l but its membersblp ia com- priaed of residents fromn many different parts of town agnd it is not af- filated wlth any one ratepayers group or political organization. "This la juat a citizen's group, there's no political affiliation. We just feel tbere's a need for something like this. Partlcularly in'the Iast year there's a feeling that the citizens of Witby have flot been involved in the decisions of council and I think tbat's been the kick in the pants that was needed to get this thing going... "Our function will not be to nit pick and analyze everythlng coundil does. Really the purpose of the group la juat to react to the legitîmate concerna of the town," said the spokesman. Wbile it la stiil premature to identify the group's membera and their aima and ob- jectives, the spokesman was confident that the organization wiil be in place and ready to begin attending the town's council and committee sessions when tbey resurne next month. He described the members as, people wbo have taken an active interest In the affaira of tbe town over the years. When lnformed of the existence of the group, Regional Counilor Tom Edwards and Mayor Bob Attersley botb applauded the move provided the group la not being for- med to promote the per- sonal or political in- teresta of its members. If it's for the overaîl good of the community then I sup- port and welcome it but If it's for their own per- sonal or political gain then I'm opposed. " In the final analysis, said the mayor, it la the council members who are charged with run- ning the municipality and if the people don't like the way they are doing their job it la their responsibllity to vote the counciflora out of of- fice.
