GMF, a joint venture of General Motors and Durham instructors at their Troy Michigan facility and Durham has purchased four GMF robots at a cost of 1380,000. The robots are similar to those in- stalled at the new GM truck plant in Oshawa and the college bas araytrained about 100 GM Oshawa ern- ployees of the new Autoplex facility, said Mel Garland, Durham *College resident. Although General Motors is the company's major customer, Garland said the college will soon commence training other GMF customers once they have completed the *training schedule for the FROM PG. 1 Arena Autoplex. Garland said that, in addition to making it easier for Ontario in- dustries to familiarize their workers with the state-of-the-art techno- logy, the agreement will cover the costs of pur- chasing the expensive robots making it possible for the college's post secondary school students to gain valuable hands-on ex- perience with the equipment. "IWith prograrns like this and. our Cad-Cam program we 're helping Canada become com- petitive in _ high technoiogy and at the same time it's a real plus for ourLLst secon- dary students. A lot of the time is scheduled for GM apprentices but there will be time allocated for our third year electronic technology, and mechanical students," said Garland after a press conference last Thursday afternoon at the college..
