Kuronen said the project has been able to proceed on scheduie so far but if the strike is not resolved soon construc- tion workers will no longer be able to work "around" the, striking sheet metal workers. "We've been able to shuffle the components of the job around so far but if things dont get settled in the next couple of weeks work will begin to slow," said Kuronen. "If we can't get a roof on then we've got a problem. " The sheet metal workers, who are responsible for siding slashing and trim wrk, have been nn strike for several weeks accor- ding to Durham Con- struction Association president Alex Scott. Scott said the Dupont expansion andconstruc- tion at the General Motors plant in Oshawa are the two projects in Durham threatened by the strike action. "They're now getting down to the crunch and the carpenters just can't work around them any more," said Scott. The tile workers are also on strike according to Scott but that strike will not be a factor in Dupont's expansion un- ii the project's final stages. There is no word on when the sheet metal workers will return to the negotiating table," he added. Scott said the laborers union is also in Two streets closed for dances Two more streets in Whitby have been gîven permission by council to hold street dances. Scott said that ail con- struction trades are up for new contracts this year. Construction at Dupont's South Blair Street plant began this spring and is for a new packaging technical centre including offices, labs and semi-works. Kuronen said the cost of construction is in ex- cess of $1 million while the remainder of the $4 million will be spent in- ternally on new equip- ment for the upgraded facility. Although the Dupont expansion will not create new jobs at the plant (I5upont workers from Montreal, Kingston and Mississauga will fi all new, posts) Kuronen "BIA has long way to FROM PG. 13 little things can in- "Developers like to that every business will crease trade ten times," see a master plan and want the improvement he said.-, they will usually co- et their store f irst.
