Representatives from the Boston based Com- putervision and coliege president Mel Garland announced the agreement last Thur- sday consolidating, ac- cordlng to Garland, the college's commlttment tg leadlng *edge technology and the people ln business and industry who depend on It to remain com- petitive. The college first ln- stalled ils Computer- vision .CAD/CAM system in 1981 and bas contlnued to upgrade and expand the system and it's considerable library of software evef since. In ail, Garland estlmated the Durham Coilege system Is now worth i excess of $2 million and ranks among the most com- prehensive CAD/CAM systems ln the country. The system - Com- puter Alded Design and Computer Alded Manufacturlng - bas a broad range of ap- plications i the fields of eiectronic, mechanical and civil engineering, architecture, drafting and modeling and it can be used to significantly improve production and scheduling in the manufacturing in- dustry. Computervision cus- tomers, according to the company's vice- president in charge of educational services, Lou Marcarelli, use the systemn for everything from jet engine design to robographics and mapplng. Wbile one customer mlght use the systens for lis 3D modellng capabhities to circumvent the costly and tine consumig business of building prototypes, he said another mlght- use it ex- clusiveiyi two dimen- sions for mapping or drafting. SBecause the system is s0 dynamic and subject to constant upgrading and revision, Com- putervision's long stan- ding customers must remain for periodic retraining. The coliege wili aiso serve as a training ground for these customers as wel as new 'comers to the CAD/CAM system. In the past, saîd Mar- carelli, Computervision customers in Canada had to travel to Boston for training and upgrading, 'a trip that proved cost prohibitive. Now, these customers wili receive the same i*iniUiI UUNUEUEUUIUUIUIUUIIlII traiing, at Durham Coilege for considerabiy iess money. And, added Garland, through the. college's 1Skills' Deveiopment Branch, many companles receiving training wil be able to recoup some of the expense through government grants for training in business and industry. "Wlth the support Of our board, we've taken a course of trying to be top rate in high tech and integrating that capability with business and idustry. We can't be ail things to al people 80 lets try to be the best we can in spcfcareas," said Garland of the colege's new venture. Tires stolen Four tires and rims vaiued at $3,000 were stoien off a 1986 Camaro at Nurse Chev Olds at 1530 Dundas St. E. bet- ween May 21 and 22, police said. Brooklin sewers water througfl botfl dry and wet speils. Because the town is working in, conjunction with the mlnistry and ls receiving the Co- operation of Brooklini residents, the cost of the study bas been decresed from $40,000 to $10,000. The study foilows on the heels of a confiden- tial questionnaire ad- ministered by the town to determine if Brooklin residents would permit on-site inspection of their septic tanks. 0f the 601 questionnaires mailed out 370 were returned, 82 percent of which said they would allow the on-site inspec- tion. The questionnaire and the inspection are required by the Ministry of the Environment hafore a decision will ha made on whether or not Brooklin ' s li a position te receive a grant fromn the Provinicial Direct Grant Program to correct the sewer problemn Brooklin. For the study -to ha accepted by the ministry, 45 percent of ail septic systems in Brooklin will have to, ha lnspected and of that total at least haif must prove tohaedeficlent. The results of the study wlll ha presented at a public :meeting of the Administrative committee tentatively scheduled for the late fall. 010usd SOL & Sun. ~~BI~'P iA division cf *1IIL~IvAbis Anene ABLE Tservice WHfITIT' OM E AUDIO & VIDEO STORE MAGNAVOX 26" CONSOLE 82 CHANNEL, REMOTE CONTROL, STEREO ADAPTABLE (1 ONLY) OUR REG.
