Speaking to 150 women from across Durham Region author of Tbe Myth of Women's Masochism said this is la rgely due to Freudian* teacbing whicb says women tbrough evolution have been selec- ted for suffering. Freud bas labelled women as masocbists, and even bas said that if men are behaving in a masocbistic way, they are sbowing their feminine side. Womnen are accused of taking pleasure in pain, she said, but most examples gîven by psychiatrists demonstrate the ability to endure pain and to achieve greater good. This is not to say women bave enjoyed it.i When a woman is taught to delay gratification, Caplan said, she is labelledi a "good woman". However, already thinking of the next one.
