WEDNESDAY, MAY i 4, 1986- PAGE 23 Parade opens Whithy Mmor Basebail Season By MIKE JOHNSTON Free Press Staff The Whitby Minor Basebaîl Association kicked off it's 1986 season with a parade through the town and the th annual Mayors cup on Saturday.' Over 50 teams, and 70 future major leaguers walked in the parade accompanied by the Whitby Brass Band and mnembers of the Whitby Girls Sof tball Association. The parade made its way to North Peel Park, where the honour of throwing out the first pitch went to councillor Ross Batten. After the ceremonies, basebail was the name of the game as teams from Whitby and Ajax competed for the Mayor's cup with Ajax capturinlg the cup for the third year running by two points. ,For a win, a team was given two points. while a tie resulted in one point being awarded. Play during the day.saw the t- bail team lose to Ajax, the tykes, peewee and bantam teams each split their two gamnes with the Ajax squads, Ajax midget teams won both their games over Whitby's midget teams and Whitby's junior teams handed the Ajax junior teams two losses. While this is the third year in a row Ajax has won the cup, WMBA publicity director, Mike Washbrook, noted that for the first five, years, Whitby held the cup. During the opening day ceremonies the WMBA presented Cobi Foods, formerly Stokely Van Camps,, with an, outstanding sponsorship award. Accepting on behalf of Cobi's was Pete Johnson. Washbrook also said the WMBA wished to thank the Town of Whit- by's park and recreation ciepartment for preparing ail the diamonds in Whitby for the 1986 season and the Mayor's cup. Verrydt elected president for 1986-87 hockey season Brookîli Whitby Minor Hockey Association capped off a great 1985-86 season, a season which saw in ex- cess Of 900 boys and girls in houseleague, rep and select minor hockey teams, by electing a newý siate of directors for the coming year. Elected president was F4ein Verrydt who "Il héàd-up a board con- sistmng'of past president Bil Beer, first vice- predent'John Moore, second vice-president Dave Wall, third vice- president Bob Ashby and fourth vice- president Doug Weales (referee-in-chief). Patti' Washer was elected secretary, Peter Kennedy iequipment manager and- AI West- COtt was made treasurer. Once again Jack God- dard vili serve as the association's OMHA contact. Bob Burgess was elected select direc- tor, Sandy Croucher will serve as sponsorship director and Marg Knowles will continue as publicity director. This year's assistant rep directors will be Graham Croucher, Ron Warner and Gary Rock. The assistant houseleague directors will be Peter Lang and George Publow. Gloria Johnston wiil be in charge of the ladies auxiiary and Fred Wolffe will be tour- nament director. Triple The honour, of ieading the Whitby Minor Basebali opening day parade on Saturday and carrying the banner went to David Lylyk, Keith Afilîs and Tim Paddister this year. Fifty Play teamns ranging troni T-bail to juniors mar- ched in the parade as did representatives of the five ail star teanis. The parade made its way fromn the Kinsmen park to north Peel park. Free Press Staff Photo -I Bail One North Ward Councillor Ross Batten, had the honour of throwing the fir- st pitch to officially open this year's seaon for the Whltby Minor Baseball Association and the Whitby Girls Softbail Association. The councillor promptly threw the first pitch over the head of the batter, fire chief E.M.
