PAGE 22, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 1986, WHITBY FREE PRESS Whitby Senior band isoftoMnra Dy MIKE JOHNSTON Fi-ee Pi-ess Staff Members of the Whit- by Senior Public School Concert Band, bave collected enough money to make their trip to Montreal and New York State this spring, despite- being turned down by Whtby Council foi-a grant. Band leader, Bruce Court, received a check fi-om Administrator Bill Wallace in the amount of $500 after a council meeting last week where Mr. Court had at- tempted, a second time, to convince council to give the band a grant ini the amount of $1,000. Council voted against the grant. The $50 was donated by an anonymous coi-- porate citizen after the operations committee, a week before, had i-efused to approve the grant. However, even after the donation, the band was still $500 short of the $15,000the trip will cost. The next morning, Mr. Court i-eceived a phone cali from Mayor Bob Attersley infoi-ming him that the $500 and a littie bit more had been donated by varlous anonymous cor- porations. Mr. Court wouldn't disclose how much theband received but saîd "it was enough s0 we don't have to est at a hamburger stand for eight of oui- meals. " While his attempts at receiving a grant from council failed, Mr. Court said he was in full sup- port of the town's grant policy but complained there was a lack of con- sistency in the way council chose to distribute grants. The town had granted $1,500 to the County Town Singera while at the same budget meeting a grant was refused to the achool band. Mi-. Wallace later informed Mr. Court that the County Town Singera received their grant because their trip to EXPO '86 was a one shot deal and the town had no policy which would alow a grant to be given to the school band. His' appearances at council and commlttee meetings, often accom- panied by members of the band dressed in their blue unforms, was at least a learning ex- perience, said Mr-. Court. "The students and I learned a lot about how a municipal gover- nment la i-un. inmnow aware of the proper channels and 1 know exactly what the town's grant policy towards cultural funding is,"' he said. The band leader had nothlng but pi-aise for the corporate1 and private citizens who supported the band. "Two ladies dropped off cheques of $5 each because they couldn't SEEPG. 31 The members of the Whltby Senior Public Sehool Concert Woodhouse, Julie Twlgg.
