WEDNESDAY(, APRIL 16. 1986, WHITftY FREE PRESS Council turns down $500 Band grant Altbough Whitby Council olly had to ap- prove a grant of $500 to the Whitby Senior Public Sehool Concert Band, and not the original $1,000 asked for, councillors voted against the grant. Mayor Bob Attersley announced at the Coun- cil meeting Monday niglit that a private citizen, who wishes to remain anonymous, has contributed $500 towar- ds the band's trip to Montreal this spring. Bruce Court, the band leader, made a deputation Meore coun- cil and indicated that a bottie drive the band held last Saturday should raise around $500, leaving the band $500 short o! the $15,000 the trip will cost. He also informed council that the band had won a gold medal at' the Oshawa Kiwanis festival held Monday morning. Stating that the town has established policies for the protection of the public, counciilor Ross Batten along with coun- chllora Joe Bugeili and Marcel Brunelle and Mayor Attersley, voted against the grant in a recorded vote. Councillors Tom Ed- wards and Joe Drumm voted in favour of the grant. Councillor Gerry -Emmn was not at the meeting. Councillor Batten was referring to the fact that policies have been established to prevent taxpayers money being used every tirne a band, or any other group, leaves Whitby. When asked by coun- cillor Bugelli whethfer the Durham Board of Education has made a financial contribution towards the tnip, Mr. Court said there has been none but the achool board bas provided two teachers for the three days of classes he and a fellow teacher wiII miss due to the trip. Mr. Bugeili then told Mr.- Court that thé achool board would be. the proper funding body and there shouldn't be any hesitation. in requesting money from them. CHOO Chili-Cook-Off begins May 23 The CHOO Chili Cook- Off International begins May 23, running tili May 25, and along the way promises to provide en- tertainent for both young and old. From a Saturday af- ternoon gathering at Swiss Chalet Park in Greenwood, Ont. in 1980 which attracted 100 people, this year's cooiç- off is expected to attract over 4,000 people in- cluding chili-cookers from America. Through a unique 'Adopt a Yank, Adopt a Beaver' program, Canadian chili cooking teams will provide ac- commodations for American competitors. The annual event, while stirring up chili for even the hottest of tastes, la also a fun- draising event for physically handicapped children and the Easter Seal Society. The weekend of- ficially gets underway with the opening ceremonies hosted by Mayor Bob Attersley at the Heydenshore Pavillon on Friday, May 23 at 6p.m. At the same time, the country casino will get underway while country music willbe presented outside. Capturing the country spotlight during the weekend will be Carrol Baker who will present the Carroil Baker show outdoors on Sunday from 7 tili 8:30 p.m. Also on Sunday will be the finals of the CHOO country talent show, taking place from 1 tili 5 p.m. John K. Gulley, one of Canada's moat suc- cesaful singer- songwriters will also be appearing during the weekend. During Saturday and Sunday, featured events will range from golf games to a dunik tank. A ballon flight will be available for those brave. enough and. treasure hunts and children's games will entertain the young. .On Sunday from 5 to 5:30 p.m. the Chili awards will be presen- ted culminating with the chili supper being ser- ved at 6p.m. The weekend, hosteci by CHOO country radio and the Durham Regional Police Force, guarantees to leave you with a amile on your face knowing you've had some o! the best chili around and helped a physically disabled child.
