The Ontario Public Service Employees Union members are fed up wltb the province's half-hearted efforts to negotiate and tbey want a quickly negotiated and substantial psy increase In their 1986 wage con- tract, accordlng ta OP- SEU local 331 president Joan Gates. The institutional care workers, wbich include RNA's, cbild care workers, occupational instructors and recreation therapists, have only just received their 1985 contract, ac- cording ta Mrs. Gates and last year it was December before they were able to settle the 1984 contract. "These are aIl hands- an people wha wrkwiith patients In a psychiatric facility and tbey are l underpaid. And then, to add insult to injury, they have to wait a year ta get a bloody pay in- crease," said Mrs. Gates. On Thursday, said Mrs. Gates, institutianal care workers across the province were out on the picket lune in an effort to bring their case to the attention 'of the public before the new negotiations with the province began Friday. Jab evaluatians are a problem that have to ha addressed througbaut the Ontario public ser- vice, said Mrs. Gates but nowhere are they more antiquated than among the institutional care workers. The job specifications and psy standards were first established more than 20 years ago, according ta Mrs. Gates and those standards are no longer an accurate reflectian of the jobs or the reqwirements necessar ta perform them. "lWe're working on class standards establisbed in 1963 and 65 and it's time those standards were evaluated. A lot of these people are college and university educated. WANTED VOLUNTEERS WITH A HEART The Heart and Stroke Faundation needs volun- teers ta help canvass the areas of Brooklin, Myrtie, Ashburn, Raglan and Columbus during the month of February. Volunteers are being asked ta canvass. just 12-15 homes in their immediate neighborhoods and they have the whole month of February'in which ta do so. Area chairman, Verna Shepherd is particularly anxious to get volunteers for the Raglan and Columbus areas. She explained how colours affect our lives; how to help astbma patients and the elements and curative powers of water. This Family and Consumer Affairs meeting was under the canvenorship of Laurel Hamer. The motto was - Stand for something or you wilI faîl for anytbing. It was stated that we need definite ideals in order not to be influenced in the wrong way. Roll caîl was to name an article haing worn that was made in Canada. One lady was dressed entirely in Made in Canada clathing. Lunch was provided by Sylvia Hahn. The next meeting will be the Resolutions meeting ta ha held on Feb. 19 in the Community Centre at 1: 30. The hostesses will be Hilda Stanley and Mrs. Royce Iriwn. COMMUNITY DANCE Ashburn Community is holding another of its famous dances at Thunderbird Golf and Country Club on Feb. 8. This promises to be even hatter than most as a live band complete with vocalists will provide the music. This band offers a full range of music for every age and taste from the Top 40 to Rock and Roll to Country to '50s and up.
