WHLTBY FREE PRESS, WUDNEStDAY, JANUARY 22. 1986 PAGE 23 Town looks to province. for Brooklin improvement funding Town officiais hope to know by this spring whether or not the province will corne through with a second Ontario Neighbourhood Improvement Program grant of approximately $250,000 for long awaited road and communlty centre ixnprovements in BrookIin. Last year the town received approvai for a grant of $260,000 for the first phase of the im- provements which are slated to begin this year. That grant, which will be matched by the town, will cover the cost of major road and drainage improvements on Church, Albert and Simcoe Sts. and repairs to the commumity centre to be done this year. As. well the first phase fun- ding will cover work on Bagot, Charles and James Sts. to be done in 1988. If the province ap- proves the phase two funding, in the ful amount, $W,000 will be spent to build a seniors activity room at the community centre, another $12,000 is slated for play equipment at the centre and further work will be done on Queen, Centre, Duke, Pearl, Princess and Durham Sts. as well as to Cassels Rd. According to Whitby's manager of long range policy planning, Larry Cavanagh, the town stands a good chance of getting approval for the phase two funding although it may not be for the full $25,000. He said Whitby has received several ONIP grants in recent years and there is the obvious concern that the provin- ce may feel there are other communities in greater need. "There's always the question of how many times you can go to the well," said Mr. Cavanagh. According to Mayor Bob Attersley, the Brooklin improvements are long overdue and the town is committed to matching whatever funds the province ap- proves for the second phase. "We haven't spent any money up ini Brooklin for almost ten years now and we have an obligation to make some improvements Up there. If the province cornes through, we're. in for a quarter of a million dollars. But it's going to be a drawn out process. It ian't going to happen overnight." qJfgda'g Cehamnmc Province releases guide for lottery winners Toronto, Dec. 2 ... Big Iottery winners cana take advantage of a new publication to help them handie their win," said the Honourable John Eakins, Minister of Tourism and Recreation, who ls responsible for the On- tario Lottery Cor- -poration. The "Winners' Han- dbook" was prepared by the Ontario Lottery Corporation with the help of industry associations and exper- ts in financial, legal and real estate fields. Said Mr. Eakins, "while some grand prize winners have aiready sought expert advice before collecting their prizes, the Lottery Corporation has responded to the need for general advice for those winners who have not." The most important initial piece of advice experts give to new winners is not to rush ln- to anythlng, to assess their individual goals and consult professionals. The bookiet contains sections on banks, trust companies, accounting, law and taxes, invest- ment, real estate and insurance. It also draws on previous winners' ex- periences, and gives hints on.how to handie donation requests and the news media. "While the results were as varied as the winners themselves, the bottom line was basically the same,'" said Mr. Eakins, "life goes on for winners in much the same way as it always bas. " The survey revealed overaîl, 90 percent of winners kept their-jobs, with 80 percent choosing to batik or învest their winnings. 44 percent shared their prizes with familles, friends or charities, while 28 per- cent bought a new car. Just over 16 percent received requests for financial assistance, but only two percent found this to be a problem. The news media treated winners fairly accor- ding to 91 percent of respondents. The Ontario Lottery Corporation operates six lotteries in the province: Wintario, Lot- tario, Instant, Provin- cial, Super Loto and Lotto 6/49. Since its inception in 1975, over $2 billion have been returned to prize winners. Another $1.3 billion have been generated for sports, fitness, cultural, recreational, health and enviromnental - health related research, hospital capital and charitable projects.
