According to Eaater Seal special events co- ordinator Sue MacLat- chy, they hope to raiae $1 million province-wide this year. At a press reception laat week in Bowman- ville to kick-off the Durham Snowararna, Ms. MacLatchy aaid that, while the Eaater Seal Society enjoysaa high profile in the charitable market- place, there are 53,000 charities in Canada competing for funds and she urged the aasem- bled anowmobilera and Rotariana who are organizing the event to work extra hard gathering pledges for the Feb. 2 event. "Charity la nowhere near the top of people'a priority list," said Ms. MacLatchy. "Statiatica show that nine out of every ten people do flot budget for charity ... We have to fight now and we have to fight hard." The Durham Snowarama is for snowmobiles only and participants will be riding for pledges over 100 kilometers of trail beginning at the foot of Main St. in Port Perry. Rider registration is from 7:30 tilI 10:30 at Latchum Centre in Port Perry. This year'a Timmy, il year old Billy Chambers of north Oshawa, waa the guest of honour at last week'a reception. Billy la one of 244 disabled children on the aociety'a south Durhami case load. The money raised at the Port Perry Snowarama will help Billy and other diaabled children and their families cover the coats of medically prescribed equipment, parent relief programa, summer camp, pre-achool programa, transpor- tation and ail the other apecial needs not covered by famnily in- aurance or government programa. Organizers are hoping to round-up at leaat 200 snowmobilera to partic- ipate in the annual event. Local anowmobilers who want to get in on the act can pick up pledge sheets at the Whitby Free Press office and at the IGA in Brooklin.
