PAGE 24, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1985,WIIITBY FREE PRESS Anderson, Henry Street, Denis O'Connor HIGH SCHOOL NEWS WEEK By EVELYN WIELINGA Anderson H.S. A course for assisting students with a learning disability has been available at Anderson since last year. This course helps students cope more effectively in their regular classes. Although this type of program has been available in elementary schools for several years, the student now is able to benefit from the continuation at the high school level. This is a course fitted for students with lear- ning disabilities. The disabilities may range from writing problems to reading problems or any problems which prevent the natural learning process from taking place in any or- dinary course. The purpose of this class is to teach the students to develop cer- tain strategies to com- pensate for their lear- ning disability. Therefore, a student with a writing disability may be taught to work on the computer so that he can function quite well and progress with the learning program. At Anderson, Mrs. Dillon, started the program. Each student is put on an individual program to work on strategies for his par- ticular need. However, the student does not spend an entire day in this class, but merely one period. During this time, each student is taught helpful skills through his "weak" subject. This is of a double benefit for the student who not only learns of ways to cope with his disability, but also gets extra help on a course which is creating problems for him. Then, this is followed by a program called "in- strumental enrich- ment" during which a student is helped to develop his thinking skills. fi Buy a beautiful Stellar between now and December 23,1985 and you could win the base price* of a Stellar SL in cash. However, a close link is established between Mrs. Dillon and the student's other course teachers to arrange for modifications that need to be made to the student's course to enhance his learning process. In addition, the parents of each student in this program are kept informed of student progress. Af ter the student has spent two years in this program, he is placed into regular classes all day. The student may then be able to use the strategies he was taught to benefit him, and facilitate his learning process in ail courses. The web of relation- ship between parents, the teachers of these students and the studen- ts themselves allows not only the student's per- sonal growth, but enhances student self- esteem. Through this progress the students benefit as well as the community to which these students will offer their services in the future. By VERONICA FILO Denis O'Connor H.S. Congratulations, Chris- tina. Another one of our students, Michelle Kleiss, made it through the first set of tryouts for the Provincial Field Hockey Team. Michelle played hockey on the school team this year and that's where her initial interest started. Good luck during the next cut! In playoff action against Henry Street High School, our midget girls basketball team finished their season. The final score was 34-18 for Henry Street but the girls put forth great ef- fort to catch up after their low score at half time. The junior girls basketball team prepared for their quar- ter finals game by hosting an exhibition match against Paul Dwyer High School. Our girls lost but, for- tunately, the game did not count against them for last Friday's "real" game against Uxbridge High School. LOSSA was held on Saturday, Nov. 23, in Bowman- ville. Details will be in the next week's column. Now that the basket- ball season is over, girls volleyball has started. Tryouts are open to all girls who are interested and willing to work as part of the team.
