For the beat in CLA SSIF TED ADV ERTISIN G Cal from page 5 Swan on extra biliDng can set their own fees men there is no reason w.., of us can't. The politicians sure do." I warned him against cheap shots at poiticians. They pay their dues in after-hours phone cails and bowling banquets. And surely doctors have the same right to see their professional fees as dentists and iawyers do. "But you haven't heard my argument. I'm flot saying that doctors shouldn't set their own fees and extra bill. Im saying that not just professionals should do this. Everyone should do it. The law should require ail bis for extra billing must be paid." That, I said, was ridiculous. Professionals have to go to sehool for the longest time, and a doctor holds your life in is banda every time hie operates. "isten, smartass columnist, " Picketline said. "I know a guy who works assembling motor cars. Every day he spends screwing on hundreds of nuts to hold steering assemblies together. A life is literally in his hands every time somehody drives that car for the next ten years. Daily. You go to a doctor how often? Twice a year if you've got an overactive imagination? Don't give me that life-is- in-your-hands talk." So extra biling is in? "For doctors. For nurses. For teachers. For al union people. It also means ail unions have the right to set their own contracta. Its o ly fair."
