WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1985, PAGE 15 Not enough Big Sisters to fill need Women with a few hours a week to spare are desperately needed by the Big Sisters of Whitby, Newcastle and Oshawa. "Many of our Little Sisters have been waiting two, three and four months and that is not good," says Carol Rhodes, Big Sister co- ordinator. "Right now, there are 10 to 15 girls ranging in age from eight to 15 years old - some of which are in great need - waiting to be matched." As the Big Sister program becomes bet- ter known in the com- munity, the number of requests for Big Sisters has increased. However, says Rhodes, there are not enough Big Sisters to fill the need. Big Sisters provides girls ages six to 16 years an opportunity for per- sonal growth and social development through ELECT TO COUNCIL VOTE friendship with a Big Sister. A Big Sister is a women 18 years old or over who devotes time to build a special relationship on a one-to- one basis with the Little Sister. In preparation to becoming a Big Sister, orientation and training sessions are given. Potential Big Sisters should be prepared to make a one-year com- mittment to the program and have time to be with her Little Sister on a weekly basis. Matching of a Big and Little Sister is done through a careful screening process, which attempts to ac- commodate the needs and desires of both the young girl and the woman. Further information on the Big Sisters program can be ob- tained by calling Carol Rhodes at 728-7525. - Has served on over 50 different clubs, associations, executives, and committees as a volunteer in the Town of Whitby. -His active participation and experience in a voluntary capacity reflects his true community commitment.
