Jacob Bryan House 300 Byron Street South Whitby, Ontario REASONS FOR DESIGNATION F 300 BYRON STREET SOUTH Historical The house was buill in 1862 by William Dunkley for Jacob Bryan Jr. He was a hotel keeper in Whitby, having owned aI dillerent imes, the Ontario Hotel and the Royal Hotel. He also served as Whitby's Chiel Constable in the 1870s. Architectural The Jacob Bryan House is a good example of the "Regency Cottage" style. The house is one storey wilh the characterislic hip roof but conlains no specifically "Regency" details. The paired brackets under the eaves, the bull brick quoins and voussoirs, the six over six sash and the door- way wllh reclangular transom and ide ights are ail leatures which were common at the lime but ail flot "Regency Collage" in form. The laler enlargement oftlwo windows and the addition of the ront porch have been carried out in a com- patible manner and enchance the houses design.
