PAGE 2, WEDNESDA Y, AUGUST 28. 1985, WHITBY FREE PRESS Finmg a practical, not a religious issue, Whitby truste e says Whitby Trustee, Ian Brown, sees the exten- sion of funding to separate schools as a practical issue, not a religlous issue. Commenting on the decision by the Durham Board of Education to make its own presen- tation to the legislative hearings on Bill 30 (the extension of funding to separate schools) Brown said, "It has neyer been a religlous or moral issue with me. "My major concern is the lack of funding resources. The money which was available for public schools is now not available. The local property owner will have to pay more, as opposed to the province paying its share. "Whether it is just or fair is irrelevant. That takes a back seat to what is practical. 1Z~~~ STELLAR STELLAR SL $8995 Brown, vice- chairman of the board, said that when the issue first arose he had made a motion to oppose the bill. Questions about equal access, protection for the staff, and whether adequate funding will stili be available for the public schools have not been answered, he said. Although A.L.S.B.O. (Association of Large School Boards of On- tario) is making a presentation to the hearings, Brown said the board felt it necessary for Durham to raise its own unique concerns. The Jeppesens, who also won last year, live on 3N0 Rosedale Drive where they grow a thousand marigold plants. They grow the plants from seed which they collect in the fali. In past years they have started the plan- ts inside and transplanted them, but this year they planted the seed directly into the ground with ex- cellent resuits, and much less trouble. Regular spraying with a systemic to control spider mites, lots of water, and removing dead blossoms regularly to encourage growth are their secrets for success. The Jeppensens are sold on marigolds. Elfrida said that she would grow them even if there were no contest because they look the best of ail flowers for the whole summer. "They picked a good flower for Whitby," she said. Winners in other categories were Krebs' Restaurant at 918 Brock St. N., judged best of nine commer- cial entries; last year's winner, Croven Crystals, 500 Beech St. W., judged best of two industrial entries; and the Town of Whitby Municipal Offices, 575 Rossland Rd. E., the only entrant in the institutional category. Mayor Bob Attersley will present the awards at a special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, held September 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village.
