The fourth and eliminating game for Whitby was a 0-5 loss against the more aggressive Burlington team. But after they have retired for the evening, the motel owner drops by. He is a meticulously honest chap, and finds that the clerk has overcharged the salesmen. The room should have rented for $25. He orders the clerk to return the $5. The clerk does so. But before he gets to the room, he ponders the difficulty of splitting $5 between three people. So to aid the process, he takes $2 for himself. Then he returns $3 to the salesmen. Everybody's happy. But wait. The salesman each originally paid $10; each then got back $1. So three times nine dollars equals twenty-seven dollars. The clerk kept two dollars. Twenty-seven plus two equals twenty nine dollars. What happened to the other dollar? Anyway, that's the type of problem 1 find in- teresting. I included such in other columns. But feedback is important to a writer, and all the domestic advice I received led me to believe that only a few other nuts might be interested in such stuff. If you aire interested in such stuff, please let me know. Phone Michael, or drop a note. Help me win a - domestic discussion. The first one to provide the answer to the sample puzzle described above will win the opportunity to join me on a ten-mile run with some members of the Whitby Tigers. 3. Bradley Reed and Cory Woodward scored two goals each and Ian Walendzewicz added a single for Whitby. W.G.R.M.L.A. would like to thank acting mayor, Reg. Coun. Gerry Emm for atten- ding the opening ceremony of the provin- cial play-offs, Mc- dDonalds and Ronald McDonald for joining in the championship games and lighting up the faces of so many small people, and also to Coca-Cola through their distributors Highland Beverages for their par- ticipation in the refreshments. In a tournament this size, a lot of pre- planning and a tremen- dous amount of work is done by volunteers from all the teams in the Whitby association, to them, a special thanks for making this weekend a great suc- cess. EDITOR'S NOTE: Dorothy Mehta is the publicity director of the Whitby Garrard Road Minor Lacrosse Association. Drunk driving By Const. PETER BRAMMA Community Services Branch Durham Regional Police Force Reading the local newspapers over the month of July made me feel quite angry. Several accidents had occured in the region where innocent people had been killed by drivers who were later charged with impaired driving. Nothing the driver can say or do will be able to make up the loss to grieving husbands, wives, parents, relatives, and friends of those killed. Drunk driving is the fourth leading killer in Canada today, and the number one killer for people under the age of 30. Statistics show that every day in Ontario, alcohol is involved in the death of at least one person and the injury of 81 others on our streets and highways. The toll in human misery and suf- fering is beyond calculation. All of us have to recognize that driving a motor vehicle (and this includes snowmobile, motor boat, and airplane) is a privilege and not an inherent right. It is a privilege that carries with it a substan- tial responsibility. Nobody has the right to take chances which endanger human lives and other peoples property. Let's face it: the car you drive is potentially more dangerous than the gun I carry. We have to be aware what terrible weapons of destruction our motor vehicles can be, and drive them safely. Con- suming alcohol is going to greatly effect our driving ability - we have to realize this - and then do something about it. .What can we do? First, we should set a good example to others, especially young people, showing restrained drinking habits especially when having to drive. Second, when serving guests who are going to drive after leaving your place, take responsibility for them and moderate their con- sumption accordingly. Third, refuse to ride with a driver who has been drinking to the point you -uspect he or she might be impaired. How can you be sure you are not impaired? The best policy of course is if you are going to drink - don't drive. It has been proven that driving is affec- ted at less than half the legal, blood alcohol limit. Most affected is the driver's ability to attend to too GOLDEN GATE, 107 Brock Street South, Whitby 668-2222 This popular, 30-year old Chinese restaurant has recently in- troduced Szechuan Cuisine for those who like hot, spicy dishes. n addition to its Chinese fare the Golden Gate also of- fers a wide selection of Canadian dishes. If you do decide to drink, limit yourself to one drink (one drink equals one bottle of beer or one and a half ounces of liquor or five ounce glass of wine) per hour or less to allow your body the time it needs to burn off the alcohol. CAUTION: Remember, alcohol affects everyone differently. One drink per hour may be too much for you (especially smaller persons, inexperienced drinkers or when taking drugs). Remember life is priceless, and it can be snuffed out so easily in a motor vehicle accident. By our ac- tions and by our words we must do everything we can to impress on drivers of all ages the seriousness of the risks they run by driving impaired. P.S. Some insurance facts to keep in mind. If you are convicted of a drinking-driving offence: 1) You are not covered by insurance for expenses incurred in relation to your car, medical, surgical, dental, chiropractic, hospital, professional nursing and ambulance service. In addition occupational retraining and rehabilitation are also your respon- sibilities. A drinking-driving conviction also exem- pts your insurance company from providing any loss of income assistance. 2) You, not your insuran- ce comoanv. are liable for any costs charged again- st you that exceed your maximum coverage. 3) If you wish to drive again after your period of licence suspension is completed, your insurance rates will increase by an average of 50 per cent upon first con- viction, and additional 100 per cent for each sub- sequent conviction.
