Unfortunately, 1 had to be out of town that weekend and was unabie to get back in timne to submit my column. As my faithful readers have probably surmised by now, my interest in sports is centred- mainly on those in wbich persons with whomn I arn intimately acquainted take part. In watching these contests I becomne enotionaliy involved to the point where I share with them the estacy of victory and the agony of defeat. I have always encouraged my loved ones to get out and participate in sports and I was prepared to nurse their battered bodies and egos tbrough the various mishaps that are bound to arise. I have mnanaged to stay cool through scraped knees, broken bones and possible concussions but last weekend was too much. Last weekend, I finally consented to go out and watch a young man dear to my heart racing is motorcycle. Now motorcycles are one of the things LA CONTESSA BEAUTY LOUNGE 119 G REEN STR EET, WH ITBY 668-9262 Grand Opening Special introducing our new waxing boutique 1 3 Off~ OFFER E XPIRES AUG. 31185e e 3 1/ introducing Donna our ptc FULL SET 0F NAILS PORCELAIN REG. 140 NOW s20.oo ACRYLIC REG. $35 NOW i75 that is on the very bottomn of my list of desirable modes of transporation which includes walking barefoot over broken glass. Racing the damn things is even lower in my esteem. However, I felt the very least I could do would lie to go out and cheer hlm on if he insisted on choosing such a dangerous activity. Watching ahl those young men risking life and limb roaring around the track was harrowing enough, but when lie wiped out and became airbor- ne without benefit of a parachute, I could almost wish he'd chosen sky diving. Fortunately he escaped with nothing more serious than a wrecked bike and some pretty painful scrapes and bruises. But from now on, I've decided that there are cer- tain spectator sports this spectator will stay away from - my heart is still somewhere between my moutli and where it should be. From now on when any of the young people in my life intimate that they are thinking of attempting to become a champion in somnething, I'm going to suggest tiddly winks. Cone in today toir a Brook lin fa rmer wants town to correct dra.inage pro blem Free Press Staff Brooklin farmer Bruce Hannam, lias engaged a lawyer wlio lias given the Town of Wbitby notice to respond under tlie Drainage Act. Hannam said lie was unsatisfied witb the town's refusai to lower an Anderson Street culvert to drain bis fields, and council's direction to hlm to make application under tbe Drainage Act. He appiied to the town last May, lie said, wlien lie discovered the reason bis field drainage tules were not working properly was because the end of tbe tule syatem tbat sliould bave drained into the town ditdbing waa in ef- fect "dammed up" by the igli placement of tbe culvert. "I knew tlie old tules were tbere, but tliey didnt work. This spring I dug up the end and saw why tliey didn't," lie said. Hannam said that over past years lie lad repiaced a number of tules in the system and still lis land was not being properly drained. He estimated that about one and a haîf acres liad been taken out of production. Af ter inspection of tlie drainage system lie concluded the reason so0 many tules liad broken was water, unable to drain due to the higli culvert, froze, expanded and broke the tules. To discover if the old drainage system could sump pump to test for pressure on the line. Since there was pressure, lie decided to replace the broken tules and ask tlie town to lower the culvert. "The town says the tules are too iow, but I say tlie culvert la too higli," Hannam said. '66The tiles must bave worked at one time." Hannam suspected tbat wben the old town- slip of Whitby filled in a valiey on Anderson St., about 20 years ago, and installed tbe cuivert wbicb la now 36 inclies bigber than bis tile drain, thia was the beginning of the problem. Hannam said be was engineered a temporary solution to bis problem. Tbe tules now drain into a barrel in wbicblie lias instalied a sump pump to pump the water into tbe cuivert. North Ward Coun- cillor Rosa Batten said, "Thie Drainage Act is a tool to resolve wlio's responsible. Engineers wiil be hired at town ex- pense to do an indepen- dent study. The ap- plicant (Hannam) would pay $300 under the act. "We can't go aliead and spend taxpayers' money witliout another opinion as to wlio sliould pay. I Hannam said lielias cliecked into the Drainage Act and discovered there are tliree different ways to appiy. Tlie first way is for tbe municipality to apply.
