PAGE 26, WEDNESDAY JULY 10, 1985, WHITBY FREE PRIiSS How Whitby won the "Super Series" By DOROTHY MEHTA As reported last week the Whitby Garrard Road Minor Lacrosse Association were the proud winners of the Hamilton Super Series. To win this prestigious title, points are accumulated from a round robin playoff. The W.G.R. midgets won their champion- ship, to get into the finals they played three games, tying one and winning two. entering the finals on the strength of one goal. Game one against Kitchener ended in a 4-4 tie. Game two was a 7-3 victory taken fromn Burlington and in the third game, Whitby downed Six Nations 17-4. The final champion- ship game was played against Brampton and resulted in a 10-7 win for the Whitby midgets. Scoring for Whitby in the finals was Greg VanSickle and Steve with single goals netted by Steve Dyment, Jeff McComb, Dan Mc- Comb, Wayne Cornish, Rob Metcalf, and Rich Dyment. Excellent goaltending was at- tributed to Chris Fowlie and Dan McWhrter, who shared the duties. The Cheekers Variety bantams won two of three games. Game one was a 3-9 loss against Burlington. In game two Whitby edged out Hamilton 8-7 and won the third game against Brampton 8-4. The Ban- tams were eliminated from the championship game on goals against averages. Adam Foote and Todd Wilson accumulated four goals each over the weekend, Jeff Whittle and Chris Tucker netted 3 goals each, Trevor Rands added 2 goals and singles were scored by Brian Munro, Chris Vanclief and Mark Ain- sworth. The Brooklin Kin- smen novice flew into the finals with three straight wins. The first Sunday July 21 ALL DAY- game agaînst Burlington proved to be the toughest resulting in a close 5-4 win. Whitby downed Peterborough 16-2 and went on to beat Spartans with a 9-4 score. The championship game was played again- st Six Nations and was a very exciting tense overtime battle, which ended in a disappointing 5-7 loss for Whitby. Wayne Primeau and Steve Taylor dominated the scoring with 8 goals each. Scott McDonnell added 6 goals, Shaydon Santos netted 4 goals, Jimmy Brown, Fraiikie Lowe, Mike Massey and Rohan Mehta scored 2 goals each and Michael Burrows added a single. The tyke Redmen won one of three of their games, but had two close calîs with the lost ones. Game one was lost to the Spartans 5-6. The tables were turned in game two against Peterborough with a Whitby victory of 8-4. Another close game for the tykes was a 5-7 loss against Kitchener. The house Is one storey with the characteristic hip roof but contains no specificaiîy "Regency" details. The paired brackets under fthe eaves, the buff brick quoins and voussoirs, the six over six sash and the door- way with rectangular transom and side ighls are ail fealures which were common at the ime but al flot "Regency Collage" in form. The later enlargement of two windows and the addition of the front porch have been carried out in a com- patible manner and enhance the houses design. The W.G.R. inter- mediates reported two game scores played over the past two weeks. Game one against Caledon was played at Brooklin and ended in a big win of 12-4 for Whit- by. Chris Ainsworth net- ted 5 goals, John Pfeifer, Fred Luke and Terry Willsher added 2 goals each, with a single goal scored by Chris Lepine. Game two had a dif- ferent ending, a loss to Whitby against Mimicu of 4-13. John Pfeifer scored 2 goals for Whit- by, with Terry Willsher and Brian Trakken ad- ding 1 goal each. In zone play, Brooklin Kinsmen novice won a one-sided game against Scarborough 16-0, giving goalie Jamie Hogel his second shut- out. Whitby goalscorers were Mike Massey with 5 goals, Shaydon Santos with 3 goals, Michael Burrows and Matt Sorichetti netted 2 goals each and singles were scored by Jimmy Brown, Frankie Lowe, Rohan Mehta and Don- nie Wilkinson.
