The purpose of the exercise was to recognize those local athietes who made a sustantial contribution to their sport during 1984 and included both Olymipie and Canadian champions. The Whitby Warriors junior 'A' acrosse club was honored for winning three major tithes last year. The squad won the Canadian National Junior 'A' Champion- Wendy Primeau won a gold medal in the 100m freestyle at the same meet. Scott Currie also won gold medals at Thunder Bay in both the loom and 200m backstroke. Whitby also supplies two members to the Pickering Midget ladies' fastball team which won the Canadian National title in B.C. last August. Susan Pipher and Connie Hamers of Whitby are members of the squad. The Peacock-Crouch bantams of the Brooklin-Whitby Minor Hockeyj Association were recognized for bringing home the In- ternational Silver Stick from Port Huron, Mich, manager; Larry Win- dover, coach; Bill Locke, assistant coach; and, Mike Primeau, assistant coach. Christina Lilly, a 14 year figure skater was honored for her efforts as an amateur coach. In addition to coaching, she dances com- petitively and with her partner, Mazin Thomas of Wallaceburg, had strong showings at meets throughout Canada inluding placing first at the Eastern Ontario Sec- tionals. Lori Melien, touted as a strong possibility for the 1988 Canadian Olympic team, was also honored by the town last Wednesday. She also holds the long course title in the 50 and 100m freestyle. Melien also set the girls 11-12 national record in the 100m backstroke last year. Last summer, she was named to the Canadian National Youth Team and represented Canada at a meet in Scotland.
