The staff, parents and students held an evening social in his honor last week ta wish him well. Free Press Staff Photo After 38 years in teaching, Fairman principal retires Ater 38 years in education, Dwight Swerdfeger is going ta retire. Swerdfeger has been the principal of E.A. Fairman Public School on Palace St. for the last 12 years and despite the fact that he hais lived in Cobourg for the last 29 years, he bas a long association with Whit- by. He was the first prin- cipal of Kathleen Rowe Memurial Publie School from 1999 ta, 1963. He was also principal of what was then the King Street Public School (now R.A. Sennett) and at R.A. Hutchinson. Swerdfeger, 61, also taught at bath the Coîbourne Street Public School which was demolished a few years ago and at the Dundas Street Public School which is now Florence M. Heard. The thing he is going ta miss the most are the children. "The kids, I'm gaing ta miss them very, very nxuch," Swerdfeger said. "The kids have always been my first concern, they came fir- Once retired, he plans ta do a littie travelling and will escort a group ta Scandinavia in August for a local travel agency. He would also like ta start a new career, one that is preferably in sales. For the last 14 years, Swerdfeger has also been a member of the Whitby Rotar Club and served as its president in 1982-83 when it celebrated its 5th an- niversar. Retirement has left hlm with some reser- vations. "I go with mixed feelings, " Swerdfeger said. "But I have my health and I think lIl enjay it.
