One mile runners The Whitby Tigers Running Club held their first annual One Mile Run through the downtown core on Brock St. Sunday afternoon. Race organizers heralded the event as a tremendous success and are now planning ta make it an annual event. The race attracted runners from ail over this part of Ontario in several classes ranging from elemen- tary school students to masters (Le. over age 40) ta an elite race that at- tracted some of the best milers in Canada. Whitby had a couple of winners in the race including Paul Judd who won the elementary school race for students 13 and under. The 13-year old E.A. Fairman Public School student finîshed the race with a time of 5:12.4. The top female finisher in the high schooi 118 and under race) was Don- na Petri of Whitby. The 14-year aid Anderson Coliegiate student piaced sixth overail with a time of 5:58.69. A member of the Tigers Running Club came in first in the masters (40 and aver) mile. Gary Ranalli ran the distance in a time of 4:57.22. Taking the ribbon in the Invitational Elite Mile were twins Paul and John Craig of Toronto who deliberateiy finished in a dead heat of 4:13.0. (Pt'- Ontario) This is regarding the government's proposai ta de-index Old Age Security pensions. First, it is anly a proposai. It was presented as such in the Budget Papers and at the same time the governznent stated ciearly its concern about this particular provision as il applies ta the eiderly poor. The government promised ta monitor the matter very, very carefuliy, and this is being dane. In fact, the Prime Minister has met personaiiy with senior citizens, and their comments and suggestions are being given due consideration. It should be noted that at this point in time, not a single senior citizen bas had a benefit cut in any way, nor shahl they have in the future. There is na reason to panic and worry. Shouid the measure ta partially de-index OAS be proceeded with, the initial effects could not be feit until April, 1986. That leaves an entire year ta monitor the situation and make provisions for the neediest. The truth is, however, that 25-30 per cent of the Government of Canada 's budget is spent on paying interest on the public debt. This is a seriaus threat ta the social programs we ail wish ta protect. The government cannot sent Canadians rubber cheques.,Those cheques must be drawn on a solvent account, and a heaithy economy is required ta be able ta pay out these benefits. That is why ail the budgetary rneasures were designed ta set the public finances an a strong basis. The government believes that the economic moves it is taking wiil resuit in a stronger economy 50 that more, not less, can be done for senior citizens, the needy elderly, and the disabled. I think it is fair ta note that since September, the Gaver- riment bas taken many initiatives: extending the spousal ailowance, improving veterans' pensions, and extending the definition of disabîlity, etc. Ecanomic progress is being made. Somne 271,000 jobs have been created since last September. In the first quarter of 1985, we had growth which was ap- proximateiy 50 per cent higher than the normai economic expectations. Retail sales are up. In- vestor confidence is increasing. Mortgage and in- terest rates are deciining. Please be assured that the government is doing its best ta be fiscaily responsible and ta do this as fairiy as is possible.
