Hyundai committed to the Canadian economy Hyundai may be a relative newcomer to Canada (opening its fir- st office here in 1977), but the 32 affiliates that make up the investment Hyundai Group form one of the largest and most diverse business conglomerates in the world.* Hyundai is perhaps best known for its shipbuilding and steel making activities but its operations are far more diversified. Shipbuilding has ex- panded into drydock repairs and conversions as well as the manufac- ture of marine engines and every manner of shipping containers. Iron and steel smelting have grown to include pipe and tube manufac- turing, aluminum and copper products, steel fabrications and a myriad of other related activities. As well, Hyundai produces chemical and petro- chemical products, cement, power generator plants, in- dustrial machinery and equipment, electrical products, rolling stock, railway parts, building materials, ceramic tiles, furniture and wood products, consumer goods too numerous to mention and, of course, automobiles - both the famous Pony and now, the Stellar luxury sedan. What began as a small construction company has blossomed to a diversified manufac- turing, financial and service industry operating on a global scale. The Hyundai Group strives not only to ex- pand its market share but, as well, to share the benefits of that expan- sion. We at Hyundai are committed to the notion of real local input. That commitment was demonstrated in the op- ening of our Markham, Ontario headquarters in 1983, the establishment of a Regional parts distribution center in Vancouver, in October 1984, and has been reaf- firmed by our decision to open an automotive parts manufacturing plant in Ontario in 1985.
