Sanders and Mary Brown had better start looking over their shoulders - Dixie Lee has come to Whitby. Normally, we don't devote space on this page to the so-called 1"fast food" outlets. But, this week, we made an exception to inform our readers of the truly good food and fast service at the Dixie Lee outiet at 1017 Dundas St. E. Peter Tselios owns the franchise which la one of 120 across Canada. He tells me that the dif- ference between his operation and those of his competitors is that they don't use a central commissary. Every- thing served at Dixie Lee is prepared fresh every day right on the premises. HERITAGE BALL The Whitby Historical Society will hold their annual "Whitby Heritage Bal" on June 22 in the Regal Room of the Centennial Building, 416 Centre St. S. begin- ning at 8 p.m. There will be a cold buffett, bar pivileges and antique door prizes. Many patrons have told him that his coleslaw is the best to be found anywhere in this part of Durham Region and having sampled it at lunch last week, I would have to agree. Tselîos says it was made that morning as were the potato and chicken macaroni salads. The secret to Dixie Lee's excellent chicken is that the batter is not only freshly made every day but it isn't too heavily spiced and that the pieces aren't too heavily coated with the batter. The meat isn't kept under the heat lamp for too long - you get it fresh and piping hot. Like other operations offering chicken, Dixie Lee offers various sizes in which to buy it. They offer everything from the one piece and chips snack for $1.75 to a 20 piece barrel for $13.45. Dixie Lee also has an 'Econo Family Pack" (fine pieces of chicken with family size files and two salads) for $10.99 and a "lBucket Family Pack" for $15.99. Unlike other chicken places, Dixie Lee gives one an alternative - fish. Fresh, lightly bat- tered cod is also offered on the menu in varlous ways from the one piece and chips snack for $2.59 to the two piece fish and chip dinner for $429. They also offer shrimp dinner for $4.99 and a combo dinner (one piece of chicken and flsh, fries, coleslaw, roll and butter) for $3.99. Tselios tells me that Dixie Lee orders only that cod which is fished fromn the deepest parts of the Atlantic. Only these fish have the pure white, flakey flesh that is the most popular among fish eaters. Dixie Lee also cooks each filet in only a light coating of batter. If the batter is too thick, the fish becomes greasy. The restaurant itself is clean and Tselios says anyone is welcome to inspect his premises to make sure that is true. There is seating for about 28 people inside the bright and cheerful eatery.
