WI-IITBY FREE PRESS, WIDNI3SDAY, MAY 29, 1985, PAGE 15 GO-ALRT decision ini 90 days: Herrema A final decision on the future of the GO Transit Advanced Light Rail Transport (GO-ALRT) system will be made sometime in the next 90 days, according to Durham Regional chairman Gary Herrema. Herrema serves as a member of the Toronto Area Transit Operating Authority (T.A.T.O.A.) the operators of the commuter transit system. The chairman told the Free Press last Wed- nesday, that T.A.T.O.A. staff are currently reviewing the situation and wilI report to the board in the near future. A few days prior to the May 2 provincial elec- tion, Premier Frank Miller announced that the GO-ALRT system was "on hold" pending a review. At the time, Durham West MPP George Ashe said that the review was prompted by a "new spirit of co-operation" with Canadian National Railways. Since the Progressive Conser- vatives took power in Ottawa last September, Ashe said C.N. luas been more co-operative. The Tory frontben- cher, who serves as the chairman of the management board of cabinet in the shaky Miller government, said that the government would be prepared to discard GO-ALRT for more .conventional technology if that proved more econoical. Ashe said that if using conventional GO trains could save $100 million and be in place a year sooner, then that's the way the government should go. However, he said that if that isn't the case, then he still supports the GO-ALRT system. Herrema said that T.A.T.O.A. is anxious to get the plan finalized and the construction completed. "IWe have to make a decision within 90 days," he said. Museu openfor sason f booked before MN Th Lne oueMus e um fical op e n osfoohr season s audy eteWr Coun.
