The Church Speaks Spoasored by the CJ:;~: ~ WHITBY MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION By THE REV. DR. RONALD E. BAXTER Pastor Falth Baptlst Church As well might we seek to contain the ocean in a teacup, as to comprebend the love of God witbin these poor finite niinds of ours. Yet to know the love of God in our personal lives is the great privilege ot ail who are reconciled to God. The Bible says, "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Hlm should not perish but have everlasting lite" (John 3:16>. Notice some wonder- tul tacts about the nighty love of God, that are bo be found in this verse. ol ,Thsldwr ta First, God "lloved thewod"Thsodordta was made by Hlm, for "In the beginning God created the beaven and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). The sun, moon, stars, planets - yes the entire universe - "all tbing were made by Him and without Hlm was not anything made that was made" (John 1:3). Yet out of ahl His vast created empire, God set Mis love upon this little grain of sand we cal earth. More, He loved a world that disobeyed Hlm. I reter now to the wnrld of men whom God "created in His own image" (Genesis 1:27). Made to be like Goci in holiness, purity, love, goodness . Yet a world tbat wilfully disobeyed God, creating the wellspring of the wars, evil, jealousy, malice, pride, covetousness and every other behaviour that proves the anti-God nature witbin us. Thus He loved a world that was at loggerheads with ini. The whole istory of man is a history of war with God. "We have turned everyo ne to bis own way" (Isaiah 63:6), rather than to God's way. We have become "alienated and enemies in (Our) mind by wicked works" (Colossians 1: 21). Yet God loved our world. More, He loved our world that crucified His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus. On the Day of Pen- tecost, the Apostle Peter stood before the people and spoke of our complicity in Christ's crucifixion, saying, "Ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain" Jesus Christ! The Bible calîs our world murderers ot God's only begotten Son. The sanie sinful, hellish nature that caused the people to cry out "Crucify Hini " is ours today. Now remember, God is omniscient, that is, He knows ail tings and knows them before they hap- pen. Therefore, when God loved the world He did so despite the tact that His only Son would be wickedlY handled, falsely accused, cruelly crucified, publicly ridiculed and die accursed! This is the magnitude of God's matchless, marvellous love to Our sinful world, tbat He should so love it in spite of His knowledge of its cruelity. Now, my triend, let me ask you a simple question. Why? Why did God so love you and nie? Why did the sovereign Lord of eaven and earth allow puny men to crucify His only begotten Son? Wby? «God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believetb in Hini should not perisb but have everlasting lite" (John 3:16). He allowed - yea He predetermined (Acts 2:23) - the crucifixion that you and 1 might not perish, might not go to bell! God wants His enemies to bereconi1e.*o-HlmAdéto hare the. riches ot
