WIIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 1985, PAGE 7 Brooklin man charged with abduction and sexual assault of local woman, 18 A 34-year old Brooklil man has been arrested ln connection with the abduction and sexual assauit of an 18-year oid Whitby woman on May 6. According to a spokesman for the Durbam Regionai Police Force, the break in the case came Sunday evening when a man at- tempted to abduct a 19- year old Osbawa woman who. was jogging in the Bond St. W. and Glad- tone AVe. area. The police said that a man approached the woman seeking direc- tions. After giving hlm The Church Speaks' Sponsored by the WHITBY MIr"IISTERIAL ~ I. ASSOCIA fION By THE REV. STANLEY ISHERWOOD Rector St. John's Anglican Cburch Driving around Whitby this week you wiil no doubt have noticed how, as good citizens, many of us have obediently gatbered Up ail the branches and shoots we have trimmed from our bushes and hedges, tied them together andl left tbemn for the disposai truck to cary away. Isn't it too bad that ail that wood couidn't be saved and used for some worthwhile purpose. But it cer- tainiy is not appropriate for building; one would be hard put to turn it into even a mediocre carving; and as for providing fuel for our houses, forget it! It was juat this sort of picture which was in the mind of Jesus when He said to his listeners, "If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a bran- ch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the f ire and burned. " Even as He said these words, Jesus was probably able to look out over the grape vines so carefully tended by the vinedressers. Twice a year the vines were pruned off ail the branches which were not yieiding any fruit. Great bundles were gathered and burned. They were not burned because they made good fires but simpiy because this was the most ef- fective way to get rid of them. There was a law in those days that each year an offering of wood should be brougbt to the temple to provide fuel for the sacrifices - but the wood of the vine was not accep- table. "'Apart frorn me", Jesus said, "you can do notbing." It would be so nice if I couid look around at ahl those non-churchgoers and say, "There they are. Those are the ones He was talking about." But I'm not at ail sure that that is so. The branches that were taken away were attached to the vine - the suckers which I prune fromn my rose bush were part of the plant - the message is spoken to those of us who think of ourselves as part of the church. Sad as it may be, there are those of us who have separated ourselves compietely fromn the source of life, there are those who yield some fruit but need very severe pruning and, tbank God, there are those who bear "Imuch fruit".1 What is the answer? How does une change from being dead wood to being a bearer of fruit? Accor- ding to Jesus himself, it isn't by golng more often to church, it isn't by trying harder, nor is it by anything other than abiding in Him. "As the branch cannot bear fruit by itseif, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you uniess you abide in me" The question which remains is how does one "abide" in Jesus? This is no easy question, and the closest that I can come to an answer here is to con- tinue the analogy of the vine. As the ife-givîng sap flows from the vine into the branches so I must allow the Unes of communication to ha constantly open between Jesus and myself. Bible reading, prayer and daiiy commitment are means availabie to every one of us to keep open the power lines. It is important, too, to share with others about thinga of the faith. Then, and I would suggest only then, can we expect to see an increase in our fruitfulness, and to understand Jesus as he says, "By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to ha my disciples." 1 jE j ý WITBY CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY SUN DAY, MAY 19TH, 6:30 P.M.
