They have a right to maintain the hours o! business which they deern to bu accep- table, and which are consistent with their aspirations. The Down- town Board of Management has no authority with respect Lo the manner which each individual conduc- ts his or her business. We have recomrnended a uniforrn "hours" policy in the past and unfortunately, we have yet to achieve success in this ares. Despite this fact, I amn encouraged when noting that there are more businesses open until 9 p.rn. on Friday evenings within he downtown two years ago. Hopefully, in imne, his will become common practice; however, iL is mny belief that there is mnuch to be done prior to this becomning a reality. As the surveys in- dicated; parking must be improved, a greater variety of goods and services must be made availabie Lo the shop- ping public, and we must take greater ad- vantage of our architec- tural heritage and irn- prove store facades and the appearance of public property. When this has been accom- plished, we should be able to attract a su!- ficient number o! shop- pers to justify ail o! the on Friday evenings. In the interim, we are currently preparing a directory detailing the goods and services available from the businesses located in the downtown core, the hours of operation of each commercial enter- prise, and the names of the business owners or store managers. if we are able to sel) suff icient advertising in this medium, iL is our inten- tion Lu distribute this directory to each and every household in Whitby. downtown Whitby will not be built in a day!1 Sincerely Yours, Edward W. During this ime, each o! these gen- tlemen has exhibited a tremendous commit- ment to our cornmunity which goes well beyond the requirements o! their respective offices. Although the Down- town Board of Management and the individuals in question have not always shared the same views with respect to certain, issues, we have striven to !ind some common ground. As a resuit, much has been accom- plished without a great deal o! rhetoric, head bashing, and name caliing. I was particularly of- fended by Mr. Kneil's remarks concerning Coun. Tom Edwards. To suggest that Councillor Edwards la living in the past could not be further from the truth. Unlike Mr. Knell, 1 have found him to be a man o! vision. During my two- year association with the Downtown Board o! Management, Coun. Edwards has been the Mayor's Designate to this particular Board. IL was Coun. Edwards who took the initiative in re-establishing this board's lines o! com- munication with both the planning depar- tment, senior ad- ministrative staff, and council. I arn acutely aware that Tom realizes the impact that a vibrant and re-vitalized downtown core would have on our cornrunity.
