The following is a fire safety message from Fire Chief Ed Crouch concerning the main- tenance of electrical fuse boxes. This is par. ticularly valuable il your home is elec- trically heated. "Most people don't give their fuse box mucli thought. ..until a fuse blows. Usually located in the basement, a fuse box will generally provide trouble-free service with littie main- tenance. Proper care is often as simple as using the right type and size of fuses. IlCareless fusing could cause loss of elec- trical service or even a fire. "BRe aware of the warning signais thal could mean potential problems, contact your electrician if fuses repeatecily blow for n apparent reason, or if you detect rust in the fuse box. Overheating and discoloration in the fusebox or flickering ligts are. danger signals not to lx ignored. "By following these simple steps, you can avoid fuse box problems. -Use low melting point type fuses (identifled by the letters 'P' and ID') for appliances that use a lot of electricity. -The 'P'. fuse is recommended on cir- cuits to appliances that heat but are not motorized such as water heaters, baseboard heaters and ranges. -Time delay or dual element fuses, iden- tified by the letter ID' should be used for large motorized appliances such as clothes dryers, furnances, refridgera- tors, freezers and win- dow air conditioners. Type ID' fuses can han- die power surges when the appliance motor ac- tivates. -Always instail the proper size fuse. Al lighting and general use circuits are fused at 15 amps. -Remember to take a flashlight with you when you're going to change a fuse. Neyer change it in the dark or while stan- ding on a wet floor. -Before changing a fuse, unplug the ap- pliance which caused the overload on the cir- icuit and turn off the main switch located at the fuse box. 1 -Screw in plug-type rfuses as tightly as possible by hand and check periodically to ensure they are screwed in tightly. -The fuse box cover or door should be kept closed to protect 1 children from electrical - injury and to prevent dirt from ac- cumulating."
