"A Youth Trust brings together leading mem- bers of a community to focus their expertise on local employrnent problems, " said Dryden. His office is responsible for helping communities through- out the province set up Youth Trusts with sup- port from the Canadian Chamberof Commerce and local Chambers. The Chambers of Commerce of Whitby and Oshawa and the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade under Youth Trust Chairman Don Frise, have spearheaded the drive to establish the Youth Trust in Durham Region to deal with youth unemployment. Durham is one of five Ontario communities establishing Youth Trusts, the others being Simcoe, North Bay, Windsor and Hawkesbury. 13,180 now unemployed The number of clients unemployed and registered for work at the Canada Em- ployment Centres in Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa for the month of January totalled 13,180. Placements in the three offices totalled 416 for the month, which compares to a total of 860 placements during December. The majority of clients were registered in material handling and related; construction trades; product fabricating; assembling and repairing; service; sales; clerical and related. At the end of January, there were 226 students in the skill courses sponsored by the Canada Employment Centre and 67 people receiving academic upgrading at Durham College. Dryden, who is well known as goalie for the Montreal Canadiens fromn 1972 to 1979 and became Ontario Youth Commissioner in 1984, will outline the Youth Trust program and sign an official agreement at a Whitby Chamber of Commerce meeting at noon on Feb. 20 at the Marigold Dinner Playhouse, 419 Brock St. N., Whitby. Doors open at 11: 45 a.m. and a luncheon will be served at 12:15 p.m. Anyone wishing to at- tend is asked to reýçrve early by phoning the Whitby Chamber at 668- 4506. "'We all see the Durham Youth Trust as a vehicle to promote greater co-operation between the various agencies serving our local young people," lie said. The chambers and board of trade are sup- ported in their efforts to form a'Youth Trust in Durham by the Ddrham Region Youth Em- ployment Services, Canada Employmelit Centres in Ajax and Oshawa, Durham College, the Durham Organization for In- dustrial Training, Durham Region Social Services, the Durham Region Personnel Managers Association and the John Howard Society. Youth Trust is part of Ontario Youth Oppor- tunities, the $450-rillion government commit- ment announced in last May's provincial budget. "The trusts will co- ordinate people and dollars to ensure that youth employment and tack local problems with local solutions," said Ontario Treasurer Larry Grossman who announced the Youth Trust programn on Jan. 31.
