WHITBY FREE PRrESS,WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1985, PAGE 17 ACY sudntenjoyed chance olive*hiGermany By CHRISTINE SCHLOEN A.C.V.I. With the increased ease and safety of travel today, more and more people are discovering the diverse cultures of the world. One of the most enjoyable ways to discover the world's i- teresting people and countries is to take part i a school exchange. Anderson C.V.I. bas been involved i chool exchanges for more than four years now, and the experlences have been widely varied. Since they began par- Story hour at Iibrary The Whitby Public Library wil continue to hold its Story Hour every Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.rn. throughout the month of February. This program is for children aged 5 to 9 and no registration will be needed. ticipatng in school ex- changes, Anderson students have travelled to Quebec, France, Germany, Switzerland and Japan. The time lengths have varied from two weeks to three months, during which timne students have taken part in all aspects of their host country's life. Participants have attended school; joined ti the routine family life; learned about the culture and histctry, and more importantly, spoken in the language of their host country. This way they have made long-lasting friendships and enjoyed the experience to the fullest. During the 1983/84 school year, three students travelled to Europe; two to Ger- many and one to Swit- zerland. I was one of those three students, and enjoyed the ex- perience of a lifetime. The exchange was fan- tastically organized, and along with atten- ding school for three months, I was able to go on two trips which were a part of the exchange: one to Berlin and one to Germany's capital, Bonn. Both were terrific trips, where the studen- ta were able to get together and learn more detailed background history of the host coun- try, Germany. In Berlin, aIl the Canadian students were paired off and lived with families in the immediate ares of Berlin's hustle and bustie. In Bonin, studen- ts stayed in a youth hostel. But these two trips were just a little piece in the total amouat of cultural information which I gained about German culture. In the amaîl town wherelI lived in southerri Gerrniany much of life was lived in the traditional fashion. There the housewives stili go to thre bakery fir- st thing before break- fast to buy fresh rolîs, and everything wgs always shut down bet- ween 1 and 3 p.m. for the midday meal. It was a really relaxing three months because everything was always so organized, that there was no need to put onesel! under stress. I found attending school really fun because the students at- tended school between 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. which left the entire af- ternoon free for extra activities. Unlike here, students were not allowed to choose their own courses, the studen- ts follow an outlined -program with their homeroom class until grade 12, whereupon they could pick their own electives. From grade five on, children were split up into three different schools: one for business courses; one for skilled trades, and one for academic cour- ses which led finally to university. This system was more Intense than our own and the work was geared to that specific school level. Also, the classes which were set in grade five, contained the same students until grade twelve resulting in more close relationships bet- ween the same people. Overail, I found -the schools and living in rny host town a wonderful experience and only wish I could go again soon I I would recom- mend the exchange highly to anyone, with an interest in meeting some new and terrifie people. * 'VALENTINE b FILIET FOR TWO INCLUDES SALAD, CHOICE 0F POMMTES, VEGETABLES, COFFEE, TEA COMPLIMENTARY CARNATION FOR THE LADIES>4 FEBRUARY 14TH & 17TH ONIVY 00~ 2per couple lus tax COME & JOIN THE FUN!
