EDITOR'S NOTE: .Jim Bradfieid la the publicity officer of the Durham Region chapter of the Multiple Scierosis Society of Canada. On the By Const. PETER BRAMMA Communlty Services Branch Durham Regional Police Force Here we are deep into another winter. As I look outside the window, the snow is softly falling and bas compietely covered the summer vegetable gar- dens outside the Witby station witb a brillant white bianket. Again, the station flag is at half-mast in memory of a recently fallen brother officer in Aberta. R.C.M.P. Const. Allen Giesbrecht, 32, was cut down in the' prime of life by an apparent mad- man. And what made this young husband and father of two children the object of this man's deranged bate? His uniform. He represented the establish- ment and it's iaws. Before the gunman took his own life he wanted to get back at society I guess, and this was his way. Nothing personal! Little solace for the police officer's family. It appears that in winter death rears its ugly head more often, especially on the highways. Winter driving, to be safe, needs some adjustments from normal practices. A- defensive driver begins his driving day this way: He (or she) starts up the car and while waiting for it to warm Up brushes off the snow an scrapes the ice from the windows. As the driver works around the car special attention is made to make sure no HONEY BEAR 1 QDAY CARE CENTRE (Government Licensed Govern ment Approved) ~ d NURSERY SCHIOOL For children 2 to 5 years old ~3 OPEN FROM 6:30 A.M. - 6P.M. j$ MON.-FRI. 52 Weeks a Year Except Canadian Statutory Holidays FULL DAY, HALF DAY & I-OURLY Minutes from downtown Whitby,& just behind Stokley Van Camp THE NEW OWNERS HAVE PROVII)ED 4 *A brand new, total ly renovatedCtr Government Approved a Care Cetr £~*An abundance of new toys 1, and equipmerit *Government approved staff , and learning programs £3 *3 meals a day prepared by a ( .. nutritionally aware cook *Learning themes and outings FEW SPACES AVAILABLE FOR ENROLMENT ANI) INFORMATION CALI,& 668-6200 snow is obstructing view of the rear lights (signais & brakes). A vehicle wit h the brake and signal lights obscured is a hazard tai vehicles following (and also illegal). Also make sure the licence plaie is noi ob- scured by snow. Clean off that rear window! A good view Io the rear is essentail (as is a iiier brush and scraper, only a few dollars, and whai an investment). The outside of the vehicle cleaned off, our driver now setties into the seat. Checks to make sure there is a clear view through the windsbield, the front side windows and to the rear before he moves off (The Hightway Traffic Act says this kind of visibility must be present before operating a mobor vehicle on the highway). As our driver starts out on bis journey he will probably test the road surface for slickness by ap- plying bis brakes a few tîmes when no otber traffic is near. If visibility is poor our driver puts on bis headligbts. 1 should mention here that just recently the Highwa.y Traffic Act was amended so that headlights must be left on haîf an hour after sanrise and haîf an hour before sunset. This is an effortto mncrease the time liglîts are required and hopefuilly decrease accident. I think lights on aIl the time legislation is probably waiting in the wings. At least one European country has switched (no pun intended) go 24 hour lighsing for motor vehicles and statistics showved a dramatir decrease in accidents in thai couîn- try. Gettlng back to our driver. A truck has juat passed going in the opposite direction and bas tbrown a slusby spray ail over tbe windsbield. For a second the view la blurred. Tbe driver lets bis foot off tbe accelerator wbile actuating tbe wipers and washers. Good job the windshield wiasher fluid dus kept topped up. The windsbield quickly is cleared by tbe new winter wiper blades. Our driver is now in fairly beavy traffic. Normally the driver uses the two second rule for the distance be allows between bimself and the vebicle in front. Today tbe road is wet and slusby so our driver allows four seconds. To do tbis the driver picks a reference spot on the road abead (a post, sign, sidestreet etc.). As tbe vehicle in front reacbes this point our driver starts counting seconds, (A good wsy is go, say Io yourself in nor- mally paged wvords, 100141002-1003-1004). Our driver reacbes tbe reference point at 1004 and knows that the vehicies are at twice the recommen- ded distance âpart (M.O.T.C.> for dry roads. Followving the vehicle in front too closely and not alloiving for the road conditions and visibility has tii lie a major cause of accidents. Look at the 124 vehicle pile up on0 the HiJw'y. 401 last Nov. 26. Our driver is watching the road conditions and driving a littie less tban tbe speed limit. Afier al it's ihe maximumi speed flot the minimum speed that is po..îed. Today's conditions are iess than ideal. As our driver approaches stop signa and traffic lights he slows down smoothiy and in lots of time. Remtem- lier 'you connuot lie the rond conditions for liein1e itulile5Io stop i 1£ tese intersections - vois have f0 be in countrît of vor vehicle <it oh tirnes. Ahead is a red traffic light'and our driver bas to be able to stop even though the road is slick and its downhill ta tbe intersection. The car is an automatic and the engine ia pushing the vehicle down into the intersection even though the brakes are appiied (the front wlieels (ire locked and sliding. Our driver puts tbe selector in nuetral and applies the brakes gradually until be comes to a safe stop at the stop line somewhere un- der that slush on the road. When the light turns green our driver selects drive and pulls slowly away trying not to spin the wheels and possibly lose direc- tional control. So, for safer winter driving lets be that mucb more careful to aliow for the poorer driving con- ditions. And make sure your vehicle is in top shape - this weather tests the mechanical and electrical systems of our cars ta the limit.
