"'Thanks to the soun- ding of a smoke aiarm, what may have resulted in a sad tragedy was averted in Whitby on Jan. 19. Lives can be saved and injuries reduced' by provlding detection and early warnxng of fire. "In a fire situation, timne is very Important; the minutes and seconds gained through eariy warming may save your life and wll reduce the loss of your property due to fire. Free Press Staff Photo Ffre destroys car A fault in the elec- tricai systesa is beiieved to be the cause of, a vehicle rire that occured iast Tuesday morning on Hialeah Cres. According to a spokesman for the Whitby Fire Depar- tment, the owner of the car, a. 1977 two-door Plymouth, had just pur- chased the vehicie and returued iome,.with it just before the f ire broke. The spokesman said that the man haci at- tempted to change a fuse in the car's elec- trical panel. A short in the system la beieved to have caused the fire which totaily destroyed the instrument panel and much of the car's interior. . The man tried to put out the fire without suc- cess before summoning the fire department. The spokesman estimated the damage to the car at $2,000. Officiais investigating cause of Brooklin home fire The Whitby Fire Department is in- vestigating the cause of a fire that did $20,000 damage to a home at 885 Brawley Rd. W. in the eariy hours -of iast Saturday morning. A spokesman for the department said that residents of the Brooklin home dlscovered the fire at about 3:47 a.m. The department believes that the f ire started in the area of the home's main electricai panel whlch is located in the basement. The f ire then spread to other parts of the house. The spokesman said that the home suffered mainly smoke damage with a littie structural damage being done to the basement ceiiing and an adjoining wall. The fire was under control within 15 minutes af ter 15 firefighters fromn the halls in Brooklin, Myrtie and Thickson Rd. responded to the aiarm.
