The service will respond immediately tu, the needs of individuais in psychiatric and emotional distress who come to the hospita's emergency department oBUY in search of assistance. The program proposai calîs for the establish- ment of a multi- disciplinary crisis in- tervention team which will be available on a 24- hour basis. Under the direction of a psychiatrist, public health nurses, social workers, and psychologists will work together to provide im- mediate clinical assessment and initiate early intervention if required. Following the provision of short-termn treatment, patients will be referred to ap- propriate services in the community, to other psychiatric services available at the hospital, or for more in- tensive psychiatric con- sultation. The team will also provide follow-up care. The program will operate from the offices of the hospital's depar- tment of psychiatry and from the region s Department of Health Services, which co- sponsored the proposai with Oshawa General Hospital. The District Health Council is a volunteer organization reporting to the Minister of Health and is responsible for the planning and co- ordination of health ser- vices in the region.
