GEORGE ASHE, MPP (PC - Durham West) Minister of Government Services Ontario Computers and children iprogram announced On Nov. 21, the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture announced the "Computers and Chldren Program" - a new, $4 million Ontario Government program. "lComputera and Children" will ensure that the children of thià - province will have equal and adequate access to computera and related infor- mation technologies. Approxmately 4,000 microcomputers wil be placed in communities across the, province, under the new program funded by BJLD, and ad- ministered through the Ministry of Citizenshlp and Culture.* Existing, non-profit community organizations, such as libraries, museums, art gailerles, and native multicultural and, service groupe, wiIl house the computer centres. Up te 15 microomputers, colourmonitors, and software packages, will be placed in each centre, using hardware, from Apple, IBM, Commodore, Acorn, and ATARI. The Minster of Citizenship and Culture indicated that, "the key to success of "Computera and Chldren" is partnership. Ministry-trained co- orclinators will work wlth volunteer assistants to en- sure that the program meets the unique needs of each community, and private sector fund-raising wil occur to finance each centre's ongoing operations. The result of these partnerships will be entirely self-sufficient centres integrally involved in the development of their communities. " In addition to assisting young people prepare for future employment, the "Computera and Children" program will also provide incentives for Canadian software . and hardware development. Other benefits expected fromn this innovative program in- clude the opportunities for parents to learn tisfnew technology with their children, and improved language instruction for newcomers. Tis programn will complement- initiatives existing in the school systemn throughout the provin- ce. The new facilities will be located primarily to reach less advantaged young people who would flot otherwise have access to tins equipment outside the academic setting. "Computera and Children" is further evidence of the Ontario Government's commitment to providing Ontarians with the opportunities to keep pace with rapidly developing technology.
