Instead, the commit- tee voted to give the O.H.S. a five per cent increase ini its fee for 1985. Coun. Ross Batten, chairman of the com- mittee, said' he wasn't prepared under any cir- cumstances to recom- mend a 26.1 per cent in- crease. The1 O.H.S. request wouid have seen the. fee jumnp from $156,063 in 1984 to $196,814 in 1985. The committee voted to increase .the fee :to $164,000. Hughes told the com- mittee that the request was based on a saiary demand from the union representing empioyees at the Thickson Rd. N. animal shelter. The union has demanded a 29 per 'cent salary in- crease to give the workers wage parity ,with outside workers employed by the Town of Whitby. "I have presented to you a budget based on the union demands," Hughes said adding that whatever the committee gives is what he wili take back4oté the bargaining'table:é. ,"Whatever werpay is what .you give us," he said, 'Ne are entireiy in your hands. " However, he- did prediet that the commit- tee's decision could have an adverse effect on the operation of animal control services in1 the area.
