WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1984, PAGE 19 Change of hardware gives new look to kitchen, baths Do any of these homeowners sound like you? Homeowner A, a dyed-in-the-wool do-it-yourselfer, wants a new look for the kitchen and bath but doesn't have much time to spend on improvements. Homeowner B has used up six months and thousands of dollars remodeling the kitchen and bath but feels that something is still missing - the rooms have no personality. Homeowner C has added new cabinets in the kitchen and bath to ac- commodate a growing family, but the new cabinets don't match the old. Something is needed to pull it all together. All of these homeowners have a dif- ferent problem but, believe it or not, there is a single solution: a simple change of cabinet hardware -knobs and pulls. "Installing new .cabinet hardware can make all the difference in a kitchen or bath," says John Bartley, consumer affairs manager for Baldwin Hard- ware. "New knobs and pulls can change the look of a room, give it a distinctive personality and even make unmatched cabinets look like they belong together. And, the best part is that the change can be made in minutes." The installation of new cabinet knobs and pulls requires nothing more than a few twists of the wrist with a screwdriver or,* at the most, a drill. Before you take those tools in hand, though, consider these few sug- gestions: e Look for cabinet hardware that's easy to clean and durable (think how many times a kitchen or bathroom cabinet is opened every day!) Knobs and pulls made of enamel-coated solid brass, like those from Baldwin Hard- ware, are an excellent choice. They're tarnish-free, mar- and chip-resistant and can be cleaned with soap and water. e Don't feel locked in to the size or type or placement of your old hard- ware. Say, for example, the original cabinetry featured knobs, but you've EASY-TO-INSTALL CABINET HARD- WARE, such as these knobs and pulls from Baldwin Hardware, corne in all sizes, shapes. styles and finishes.t decided to use pulls, or vice versa. There's a variety of decorative back plates available to hide previously drilled holes. These plates are to be fastened underneath the new hardware. Simply remember to accurately mark on the cabinet where the new screw and/or bolt openings should go, drill and then attach the hardware per directions. e Cabinet hardware shouldn't fade into the woodwork; it should make a decorating accent statement. Imagine the effect created by gleaming ,brass knobs set in a dark wood cabinet. Or consider the impact of chrome- finished brass pulls contrasted against bright laminate doors and drawers. Yes, there is help for those problem kitchens and baths, thanks to the varie- ty of knobs and pulls now on the market. Even confirmed fumble fingers will find that cabinet hardware is easy to install and maintain. So now homeowners A. B and C through Z can dress up their doors and drawers with distinction and style.†Walleoverings redefine room shapý One of the frequent considerations when thinking about interior decorating is the size of the room be- ing decorated. Often, the room is either too large or too small. But that doesn't mean you have to go'to the trouble and expense of hir- ing a remodeling contractor to knock down walls or build new ones. There's a much simpler and far less expensive way, says the Wallcovering Information Bureau (WIB). Use the color and pattern of wall- coverings to create optical illusions that reshape the visual dimensions of a room. Dark colors, WIB points out, serve to enclose space. Light or neutral colors expand space. Pattern has a similar effect by making walls appear to advance or recede. In an overly large room, a bold-patterned wallcovering will make the room ap- pear more intimate. To stretch a room visually, WIB sug- gests a neutral-colored striped or string-fabric wallcovering applied horizontally. Use a strong complemen- tary color on the ceiling to add to the illusion of width. In rooms with low ceilings, choose a striped wallcover- ing in a subdued shade with a delicate floral motif and'apply the wallcover- ing vertically. This will enhance the impression of height. Another way to create the illusion of added space in a small room is to choose mural or scenie wallcoverings. Available in single or multi-panel ver- and expand the view way beyond the limits of the watls. Murals and scenics range from quiotpastorals to dynamic city scapes.
