(NC) - "'mr going to, Flor- ida for two weeks and *I want to corne home with a spectacular tan. What sort of suntan lotion should I use?" You're wise to choose your sunscreen product carefully. What you want is a healthy, warmn glow. What you don't want is a sunburn. The bestwaytogetagood tan without burning is fromn short,. repetitive exposures to the suni. This stimulates the melanocytes pigment celis of the skin) to darken without exposing the skin to excessive radiation which leads to burning. In- crease your exposure to the sun gradualIly, day by day. That way you'll have a tan to be proud of when you corne home. Far better té' have it fadeaway than peel away. Suncreens are formu- lated as ois, lotions, creams; and gels. Creams and gels generally provide you with a bit more protec- tion than oils and lotions. You mnust apply your sun- screen smoothly and even- ly and reapply it after swimrning or if you are sweating heavily. This will help you continue your.sun- screen's initial protection; however, continuous reap- plication of the same prod- uct will not lengthen the time you can be out in the sun before burning. You simply cannot double your SPF factor by applying the saine sunscreen twice. SPF factor? You've prob- ably notice.d that most products today are marked with an SPF number. The SPF numberis the "sun pro- tection factor" number. It represents the ratio of time for sunburning unpro- tected skin as opposed to protected skin. For exam- pie, if you usually hum in one hour of suni exposure, you can, theoretically, re- main in the sun for 6 hours before you will burn if you use a product with an SPF of 6. In theory, that is. Some products vary in the ac- curacy of their ranked SPF values. SPF numbers are drawn from a scale of 2* to 17. Err on the side of cau- tion; choose a higher SPF number rather than a lower one. Choose your SPF num- ber by the type of skin you have. What type of skin do you have? You'Il have to answer that one yourself by con sid- ering your previous suni- tanning history. Don't forget: Your skin's sensitiv- ity to the sun can change. Have you been badly burned before?.You will humi more easily now. Are you taking any medi- cations? Birth control puIs, for example. Tetracycline for acne? Your skiri may be more sensitive to the Sun than usual . This includes winter or summer sun . Your pharrnacist can tel you what medicines may have this effect. Be sure to ask. One more thing. A sun- humn does not show for 2 to 6 hours after Ieaving the sun. Corne W iearly. Free make overs... Prints are used for everything - from blouses to household linens. To achieve the prints, fabrics are colored by several methods. One of the most com- mon methods is called pigment printing. This is when the coloring matter la applied to only one aide of the fabric. Pigment printed fabrica have a tendency to fade and lose color when cleaned. This dyeing method can produce not only prints but also solid colored fabrics. The colorfastness of these fabrics depends on the amount of color which penetrates the fabric. If the coloring matter la deposited only on the surface of the fabric, and not well adhered, the color will be readily removed in cleaming. Some pigments do not chemically combine with the fabric, therefore, some type of bonding agent is necessary to adhere the color to the fabric. In this case, the colorfast- neas depends on the bonding agent used. If the bonding agent is soluble to drycleaning solvent or water, the color will be removed from the fabric during drycleaming or laun- dering. Unfortunately, there la no practical and positive way to idéàtify these fabrica before purchasing or cleaning. Excellent colorfastness to drycleaning and laundering can be at- tained if the fabric la properly prepared for the color application and the correct color is used. According to the International Fabricare Institute, of which this cleaner is a member, it is the manufacturer's responsibility to see that alI dyes are colorfast to the recommended cleaning procedures. Most pi gment printing is used on cotton, rayon, synthetic blends, and knits. The fabrics are u.sually laundered but drycleaning is also recommended unles labeled otherwise. Many silks are dyed by using the pigment prin- ted method and, in that case, drycleaning would be recommended. 666-2811 *ELIGANT NAJJS * For long sculptured acryllc nails * * Cal * &668«4300* Tus Wed. or evenlngs after 6 p.m.* *New Set 130 F11 I5 J ff/L ER \r t SALE 'ti Llmited Time Of fer rdor Now-SaIo Ends July 28184 40%OFF Draco Decorator Shades & Mini -Blind& "A Gleaning Service for the Entire Family" r 'T' 'T' y' 'y' ly' 'x 7r 'X 'X 'x Tý ýxý X X ýZ X X X ýZ 2
