Each child had a responsibility around the farm or homnestead which kept him busy from before dawn to after dusk. The children of the pio- neers arose before dawn when the rooster crowed, helped with milking cows, feeding farm animaIs and cleaning the house. Then the entire family sat down to a hearty breakfast. After eating, the kids picked up their school- books and walked a couple of miles to the old schoolhouse. Today, the average family lives in suburbia in a home full of electrical appliances that make housework easy. Modern children wake up to music coming from a digital dlock-radio. They put on their clothes, grab a glass of juice and walk a block to the school bus stop. Mom and Dad may gulp down a cup of coffe and probably leave for work or other activities in their automobiles. In short, we, the people of the Atomic Age, are flot getting enough exercise, While "goin'. back to the ol' homestead"ý is flot the answer for the-people of suburbia, we can modify our schedules to include more exercise.
