Accordlng to Social Services, Commissioner Doug Johns, those living on welfare are receivlng 49.1 to 59.8 per cent less than what Statlstics Canada views as. 14ç minimum accepable family income.' A single person, he stated, receives $4,236 in welfare benefits. The poverty standard for an individual bas been calculated at $9,4W3-a« year. A family of four should have*an income of $19,136 -annuaily. They receive $8,316 in welfare assistance. "The province is catering to a vocal minority of people who get great mileage out of saying that one per cent of those on welfare don't want to work,"1 Edwar- ds said. "They want to show how tough they're being on the rip-off ar- tlsts."1 1He also says that those people who have a steady job find it dif- ficult to understand the problems of the unem- ployed.. "Most of us have good jobs and a steady in- come s0 it is hard for us to understand the problems these people suffer," Edwards said. "The popular assum- ption is that these people are malingerers ... they are using the money to get drunk' and they don't want to work." He admits that these misconceptions are dif- ficult to overcome.
