The Whltby branch of the Canada Em- ployment Centre for Students has filed 185 jobs since its opening in March this year. This represents a 19 per cent Increase in jobs filed ini comparison to May 19M. The centre operates during the summer months to help students find summer employment. The service is free to both those looking for summer work and to employers and homeowners wishtng to litre students for the summer. To date, student placement officers have soliclted over 400 'local eniployers to encourage student hiring. The Town of Whitby has declared the week of July 1 to 7, 1984 as 1ire a Student Week". The purpose of this week is to create a community awareness of the need to create student jobs; summer work experien- ce enables students to make better informed decisions about the world..of work while providing themn with funds needed to con- tinue their education. During "Hire a Student" week the staff of the CECS will be holding a free resume clinie on July 4 between the hours of 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. The clintc is recommended for anyone who has neyer written a resume, or who bas flot revised their resumne since ob- taining another job. The focus of the resume clinie will be to give mndividual attention to enable students to present their Durham Centre honors student.vol1unteers qualifications to their greatest advantage. The highlight of IlHlire a Student Week" will be the second annual "Odd Job Squad Giveaway. " Ail homeowners hiring a student for an "odd job" through the Canada Employrnent C'entre for Students will have their name entered in the ballot box. The dlraw will be made at the conclusion of "Hire a -Student Week," on July 9. The lucky winner wll receive ten free hours of person-power provided by the staff of the Canada Employment Centre for Students. Anyone wishing to hire a student for a day, a week or a swnmer is asked to cail the centre at 668-5233, between 8:15 a.m. and 4:30 'p.m., Monday to Friday. Annette Kameka was given the Tony Stephen- son Memorial Award as outstanding volunteer of the year. Kameka is a volunteer for the cen- tre's coffee shop, Brock Stop and is leader of Dents O'Connor's 'Spirit of Youth' Group. Rita Collins was given the Outstandtng Recreation Volunteer of the Year Award. She also volunteers at the Saturday morning Cof- fee House. The Outstandtng Group of the Year Award was presented to Yvonne Paquette and John Stafford on behaîf of the students of the 'Man in Society' classes Rison elected new local NDP piresident *Geoff Rison bas been elected president of the Ontaro Riding New Deocratic Party Association. An independant trucker, Danistra bas also been active in the swim prograni. The centre also ex- pressed its appreciation to the Whitby Jaycettes, the St. Vincent de Paul group and the Mother's Fellowship Group of Brooklin for their sup- port.
