C anadians recently learned of yet another exam- pie of this- Liberal government's propensity, to waste. After baving poured $500 million into. De HIavilland since the fall of 1982, as well as. guaran- teelng a $450 million- lime of credit,' the, fe deral government is now faced -witha request for another $1 billion to keep the company going for the next ten years with no plan to save the aircraft company in the long term. Until now there bas been no indication that De HaviJland's financial troubles rival those of Canadair. Now we are told that the company is not expected to make money in the next 10 years and that the time to make a decision on' whether to keep going on the Dash 8, (a 35-seat propeller-driven airliner), was last month when the extra $240 million was put into the company. Parliament was not advised of the grave situation when the funds were requested in the House of Commons. . Pouring money into a bottomless pit is only going to add to the deficit problem which is, as we aui know, bad enough. Why bas the Liberal govermnent allowed this situation to evolve? This government is out of control. It does not know the meaning of fiscal responsibility, ,despite the constant ,rhetoric that thoy heave on the public in'an attempt'to convince them to the contrary. The government does not un- derstand the rules of corporate responsibility that successful companies in the priv ate sector must learn to live with. 1I'n short, the government does not understand the meaning of responsibiity - period. The Progressive Conservative Party believes that with better management of such affairs as this one particular example of De Havilland, we can begin to deal effectively wlth reducing the deficit, and create an atmosphere of greater conlidence in this country. Interest rates will be able to come down to levels at which people can live with them 'and the economy wil begin to get back on track. Canadians are sick of the Liberal government and its à loppy management techniques. The next elec- tion wil see the remedy to the problem.
