k iii ~Ii. j. Ever-Kleen of Whitby offers a unique method of cleaning brick and aluminum. George Chat- terton and Ray Vaillan- court, owners and operators of Ever-Kleen, use special chemical sprays to lift away dirt and grime from the out- side of homes. The chemical process is a good alternative to sandblasting, which takes away a layer of the brick surface while it takes away the dirt. The chemicals used are har-- mless and rinse cleanly away. Another use for Ever- Kleen's service is the cleaning of old monuments, as well as removing graffiti. A small test section can be done free of charge to determine whether or not the customer wants the ser- vice and how much it will cost. Costs vary depen- ding on the type of brick. A silicone sealer can also be applied to the brick for protection. Still another chemical can remove paint. As well as buildings and monumen- ts, Ever-Kleen also does work on boats and trailers using 'the same chemical as that im- plemented for aluminum siding. By Robert Tracinski John Deere's Lawn and Garden Specialist For the gardener, the first signs of spring arrive in the mailbox. Seed catalogs with enticing ripe photos of fresh fruits and vegetables are pleasant reminders that it is time to begin planning this year's garden. A garden plan is important to a successful harvest as it helps you de- termine where to plant each crop and how much you can plant. No matter how large or small your lot, start with a scaled drawing of your garden. Graph paper will simplify this task.- The plan will help you decide the amount of seed packets you should order, and also will serve as a planting guide for the annual rotation of your crops. Make sure you rotate your crops yearly; disease organisms may build up in the soil if the same variety of plants are planted in the same spot each year. You can take full advantage of the sun's nourishment by running your rows of plants north to south. And, so as not to shade the smaller plants such as lettuce and peas, plant your taller crops such as corn, tomatoes and oth- er staked plants at the north end of your garden. Be sure to leave plenty of space be- tween each plant for growth. You should sow carrots, lettuce and on- ions in rows about one foot apart; oth- er vegetables will need more room. For example, tomatoes and sweet corn must be planted in rows at least three feet apart, and most other crops should be planted in rows between one and a half to three feet apart. It is also important to leave space between rows for easy access to each row for weeding and harvesting later in the season. Seeds should be bought fresh each year because they will have a higher rate of germination success than seeds stored over from last year. To further insure the success of your crops, look for seed varieties that are resistant to disease, such as hybrids which are produced through carefully controlled cross-pollination. It is recommended that you order your seeds from an established mail- order seed company. These compan- ies have built their reputations on the quality of their seeds and guarantee to replace any seeds that do not produce. Depending upon the size of your lot, experiment by planting several varieties of one vegetable. This will help you discover which strains pro- duce the best fruit so you can reorder only the tastiest, most successful var- ieties next ycar. If your garden lot is a small one, look for seed varieties that have been developed for maximum gardening space conservation. For example, bush cucumbers and cantaloupes re- quire less space to grow than their vining counterparts. Beware of seeds promising to pro- duce giant fruits or vegetables. These look inviting in photos, but seldom are their tastes as rewarding.
